I was able to get lefty to give me the ride of my life in his P 51. It was a cool, clear day in October 1981. He really showed me what a mustang could do. Lefty was amazed I did not get air sick. After the flight I sat in almost all the other war birds, then his whole family, my wife and I went across the border for lunch. Lefty had a Caddy that would transport all seven of us.
He was a perfect example of a Texan. We flew over his house near Mercades no more than 100 feet above the roof, landed across from his home. He taxied the plane in his driveway. We got out and I met all his family.
No longer can a person get a ride in a P 51 like Lefty could. The aerobatics were so smooth and graceful as was he. It was over 40 years ago but I will never forget that day and spending time with such a fantastic man. There will never be another Lefty Gardner. I as sad he is gone as I am glad I was able to spend a day with him. He will never be forgotten. What a fantastic guy.

I met Lefty gardener when I was 19 years old and I was a flagger for his brother Henry Gardner in Victoria Texas. Lefty was the finest man I have ever met, he was salt of the earth.

My father, Sidney J Artt Jr, flew with Lefty as his bombardier in three Collapsible Susie. Dad always spoke highly of Lefty. Dad passed a month before Lefty, on 11/5/2008. I'm sure they hoisted one to old times.

I was a divorced mother of four who could not afford to learn to fly, but put every penny together and finally got her license in 1983. Most proud and happy thing I have ever done. Went to the Air Races and saw Lefty fly "White Lightning" It touched me so much I had tears in my eyes. It was beautiful and I felt this must be what I was meant to do. Unfortunately with raising four on my own, it never happened. one year at the races, in the pit, I met Lefty and he let my daughter take a picture with he, Lightning and me. It has always been a cherished possession. He made that bird sing and we will miss knowing he in on this earth. I am sure he is flying in heaven. Thank you.

I had no idea. I'm so sorry that i wasnt there in the most recent past but so proud that i was a very small part of your family for at least a short time. You and your family were always kinda and gracious to me and i'll always appreciate and remember you for that.
I can see you flying now more than ever.

My sympathies to Lefty's family. I have such good memories of the good times we had together. There are too many good stories to tell in this short space. He was the crop duster who took care of our farm and it sheer poetry to watch him perform his tasks. My husband Harold went to the valley with him to get a plane and rode back in the storage area behind Lefty. I thought it was a P-51 but I am hearing sories about a P-38 so am not sure about the plane. Joyce sends her sympathy also.

Lefty Gardner was my hero as a true patriot and a good man. I will always treasure the time spent visiting with him and the countless hours watching him grace the sky in White Lightning and other aircraft. We will miss him. Blue skies Lefty.

My deepest sympathies are with all of you. I have many fond memories spending time at the house in Mercedes and hanging at the Air Shows and CAF Headquarters. I was in Mercedes a couple of years ago on a mission with our students, I heard an old WWII plane fly overhead … it brought back some good memories I had to run out side even though I knew you moved a long time ago. I missed the actual plane but enjoyed memory lane and wanted to drive past the old house. I know how hard this time must be for all of you, our love and prayers are with all of you. I’m sure that Lefty and Kim and flying around taking in the sites. God Bless

My deepest sympathy goes to your family. My brother, Frank Waller, was such a fan of his. Frank enjoyed his many years in the Confederate AirForce from its beginning. I loved the airshows and all the stunt flying.

On a hot afternoon At Stead my turn finally came for a seat in "White Lightening." Having personal experiences with the A-4 and F-4, I was looking forward to some older history. The man decided to stop the line as I climbed up the ladder. A look from Lefty and I was promptly seated. What a privilege it was for me to be in the P-38 and to experience a real gentleman. My deepest sympathies on your loss.

Sharon, Darin and Ladd,
I will pray for your comfort as you all learn to live life without Lefty. Be assured that he is completely healed and restored. Lefty, LLoyd, Kim and Clint are now gathered together in Heaven praising God and our savior awaiting all of us. This is our greatet hope.
Be sure to share a lot of Lefty stories when you gather so that your hearts will be filled with joy and happiness as you remember Lefty as a husband, father and best friend.
With great affection,

Lefty, I wish to thank you for years ago allowing me to grace the cockpit of "White Lightnin" on the Van Nuys tarmac and engage in a half-hour of static mindful reverie in an aircraft I long admired from hitherto afar. We'll miss you, Good Fellow.

Soar in peace Lefty.
I never had the pleasure of meeting Lefty, but, I sure had the pleasure of watching his shows in Reno in the '38. A gifted aviator has gone home and I would expect his shingle will be hung offering to teach the angles the advanced and graceful art of aerobatics.
I offer my sincere condolences to the family.

I'd alway made the CAF airshows back in the 70's and enjoyed seeing lefty turn his P38 inside out. Also the roll into the dead engine. The whole comminity would come out and it was the big event and exposed alot of people to flying and aviation. Worked for me

In 1977 I went to work for the CAF and Lefty was one of the first persons I met. I remember him well as a gentleman and a terriffic person. I pray you find comfort in the days ahead and in knowing how many lives he touched with his smile.

We will always remember Lefty as one of our heroes.
May the runways always come up to meet you,
And the wind be always at your back.

My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of 'Lefty'. We in aviation have lost a true icon of the aviation world. I recently visited Lefty's White Lightning following restoration and observed it fly..... magnificient. I will always remember that occasion like I will always remember Lefty when I see a P-38.
