Audrey Balog Hanuscik, 91 of Peckville, passed away Friday surrounded by her family at Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
She was the widow of Michael Hanuscik, who died Sept. 26, 1989.
Born in Peckville, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Hotovy Balog. She was a graduate of Blakely High School. Before her retirement in 2009, she was employed as an executive assistant for Valley View School District, County Commissioner Ray Alberigi and state Senator Robert Mellow. She was a very active member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Peckville, past president and longtime member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She also was chairman of the 50th Anniversary Celebration honoring Father Purcell. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Shopa-Davey VFW, Peckville.
Audrey was a loving friend and mother. Her favorite joy was baking. Her cakes, cookies, kolachi and paska bread were treasured by friends and family who received them on holidays and special occasions. Later in life she developed the love of hockey and enjoyed attending Penguins games in both Wilkes-Barre and Pittsburgh. She also enjoyed traveling, making many trips to New York City to see shows with her good friends Delores Zurek and Josie Mazza. She loved dogs and enjoyed her dachshunds, Princess and Duchess as well as her grandpups, Sadie, Mandy and Angel.
She is survived by a son, Michael "Chip" Hanuscik Jr. and daughter-in-law Diane, Archbald; a granddaughter, Christina Lupton and husband, Dennis, and a great-grandson, Cameron Lupton, Glassboro, N.J.; sisters, Elaine Orleski, Binghamton; and Pauline Weinstein, Long Island, N.Y.; niece, Diane Vogel and husband, Joe, Baltimore, Md.; along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert, Mike and John Balog; and four sisters, Mary, Ann, Betty and Irene.
In lieu of flowers, Chip would appreciate donations as he plans to purchase a piano for the Lackawanna Health and Rehab D wing rec-room in Audrey's memory.
The funeral will be held Wednesday with Mass at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Peckville. Interment, St. Mary's Cemetery, Montdale. Friends will be received at the church from 9:30 until time of the Mass.
