Ingrid Castro passed away peacefully on Oct. 9, 2021, at the age of 84 years old in Scranton, Pennsylvania, from complications of having chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Ingrid was born on July 22, 1937, in Farsund, Norway, to Torstein and Solveig Thorkildsen. She is survived by her children, Sverre Thorkildsen; Nancy Casey and her husband, Sean; and Edwin Castro and his wife, Ana. Her grandchildren are Emily and Matthew Casey. She lived in Norway 27 years, Brooklyn and Queens, New York 36 years; Hallandale Beach, Florida 15 years; and Scranton, Pennsylvania, six years.
Ingrid was a loving mother, caring individual, and a classy lady who had beautiful handwriting. She had a special connection with children and pets. She had many close friends in all the places she lived. She believed in speaking softly and listening to people. She had a warm, beautiful smile when she was not worrying about others. She was a strong and independent woman. She raised two children on her own while working. She was a minimalist and spent money wisely. In addition to spending time with family and friends, she enjoyed going to the beach and pool in Florida, going to the casino and playing bingo, Yahtzee, Skip-Bo and Uno. She cooked delicious food, especially Norwegian heart-shaped waffles, lapskaus stew, meatballs in brown gravy with mashed potatoes, and Puerto Rican rice and beans. She made needlepoint art and knitted sweaters, baby outfits and blankets.
Ingrid graduated from business and cooking schools in Norway. She participated in travel gymnastics and handball. Her father went to work on a ship when she was 14 days old and returned when she was 9 years old. During World War II (1939-1945), she lived with many rules to follow when the German troops invaded Norway. When she was 18 years old, she worked as a cabin steward for a Norwegian ship for two years. She came to America on St. Patty's Day and held various jobs: live-in nanny for four children, maid, housewife, bank teller, administrative assistant at White Rock Soda Company and a broker assistant at Smith Barney Inc. She took business classes to develop her skills, was extremely hard-working and organized.
A private memorial service will be held for the immediate family at a future date. Condolences and digital photos of you with Ingrid will be gratefully received at [email protected].
