Carol J. Mason, age 79, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, after a well fought battle with Leukemia.
Carol was born Dec. 19, 1943, to Helen and Frank Talarico, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. She was named for being her parents' little Christmas Carole. After graduating high school from Marywood Seminary in 1961 at age 17, she studied nursing at Mercy Hospital Nursing School and graduated in 1964. She was a nurse for most of her life, having worked many places, and held many roles, including for the Visiting Nurse Association, the City of Miami's Prison and Blue Cross-Blue Shield. She was married in 1970, six months after seeing her husband once and declaring he was the man she would marry. She raised four children that she felt were her life's purpose and became a lifeguard at age 40. Carol at one point even ran a daycare from her home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Allen Mason Sr.; her sister, Marie Hutto; her brother, Frank Talarico; and her granddaughter, Hope Alunni.
She is survived by a sister, Delores Waters; and her four children, Ellen Taylor, Maureen Alunni, Kathleen Foley and Richard Mason Jr. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren all of whom she was exceedingly proud of.
Her greatest achievement was her family. Carol would often recall the words of a favorite poem when others would pass. She'd say it matters not the years we live or die but how we spent the dash that came between. Carol lived her dash well, and she will be dearly missed.
