Stephen W. Mullen

Stephen W. Mullen, 89, of Scranton, died on Monday in the comfort of his home. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary Roche Mullen, who died in January of 2022.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Stephen and Hilda Scholl Mullen, he was raised in the Bellevue section of the city, and graduated from West Scranton High School, class of 1953. Shortly after, Steve enlisted in the United States Army and, upon returning, he received his bachelor's degree from King's College.

He worked at Capitol Records, and later for Planter's Peanuts/Standard Brands in the IT realm. He retired out of Blue Cross but continued to work into his 80's at Pearson's.

He was an Army veteran, member of the Knights of Columbus, enjoyed bowling, and was an avid reader.

Steve was a quiet, gentle soul. He extended great kindness, generosity and hospitality to everyone he met. Steve loved to entertain at the kitchen table where conversations and libations flowed freely.

Steve is survived by a son, Stephen M. Mullen and wife, Lisha, Newport News, Va.; two daughters, Mary Walsh and husband, Michael, Pittston; and Ellen Waverka and husband, Craig, Gilbertsville; his sister, Mary Auriemma and husband, Louis, Scranton; eight grandchildren, Leila Leech and husband, Douglas; Kathryn Bachman and husband, Cody; Molly Walsh and fiancé, Sam Lizza; Casey Waverka, and Jenny Chen, Michael Walsh, Ryan Mullen and Faith Hylton, Luke Waverka, Logan Waverka; and three great-grandchildren, Doug and Ryker Leech and Ren Mullen; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by siblings, John Francis Mullen, Joseph Mullen; and an infant daughter, Molly Mullen.

The funeral will be conducted Monday, Oct. 7, 2024, with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at noon in Nativity of Our Lord Church at St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 633 Orchard St., Scranton. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Frank M. Regan Funeral Home, 323 William St., Scranton. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
