Joyce Mayhew Obituary

Joyce (Legako) Mayhew died at her home surrounded by her family on Aug. 7, 2008 after a lengthy illness.
She was born on Dec. 22, 1944 in Biddeford, Maine. Joyce was the daughter of the late Charles and Yvonne (Nolette) Legako.
Joyce graduated from Stonington High in 1964. Upon graduation, Joyce was employed by Yardney's, where she remained until leaving to raise her children. Joyce married the love of her life, William Mayhew, on Dec. 23, 1967 at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Pawcatuck. They recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.
Joyce loved spending time with her family and friends, but most of all enjoyed visits from her granddaughters, who were her pride and joy. Joyce never missed an opportunity to tell all her visitors and caretakers how proud she was of her family, and was surrounded by pictures of them. She also enjoyed listening to music, especially Elvis Presley and Clint Black.
In addition to her husband, Joyce is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Kimberly and Brian Sewart of Holland, Mass., and Tammy and Alan Nordquist of Mystic, Conn. Joyce is also survived by her two granddaughters, Allison and Bethany Sewart; her brother, Roger Legako and his wife, Bonnie, of Tennessee; and her brother-in-law, Bern Mayhew of Groton, Conn.
Joyce will be greatly missed by all her family and friends. Her strength and tireless perseverance throughout her illness were admired by all. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, and will be in our hearts forever.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 9:15 am from the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic, followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 60 Liberty St., Pawcatuck. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Joyce's memory to Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360. The family wishes to extend their gratitude and appreciation to Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut for the wonderful and compassionate care that they provided for Joyce, as well as to Heather, Geri, and Theresa, who were not only her caregivers but very special friends.
