Geraldine Coon Obituary

Geraldine A. "Jerry" Coon, 94, of River Road, Pawcatuck, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at The Westerly Hospital.
Jerry was born in North Stonington on Sept. 13, 1913, the daughter of Frank E. and Melissa Greene Coon. She was a 1931 graduate of Stonington High School and a 1935 graduate of Connecticut College for Women. She continued her education by receiving her M.S. from Brown University in 1937 and her Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 1950.
She enjoyed a distinguished career, beginning as a research mathematician at Taylor Instrument Companies in Rochester. She later accepted a position as a mathematics professor at Goucher College in Towson, Md., where she was employed for over 16 years before retiring in June 1980.
Jerry is survived by her nieces, Lavinia Wilbur, Carol Hansen, and Melissa Behney and their families.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her life companion, Dorothy Lewis Bernstein, Ph.D.; her siblings, Alice Coon, Marion Reba Coon, Raymond Coon, Avis Coon Wyman, and Carroll Coon; and a nephew, Raymond Coon Jr.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at River Bend Cemetery, Beach Street, Westerly, on Friday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. There are no visiting hours.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Audubon Society of RI, 12 Sanderson Road, Smithfield, RI 02917.
