Arthur Whitehouse Obituary

Arthur Townsend Whitehouse, 82, of StoneRidge, Mystic, formerly of Leonia, N.J., and Westerly, died peacefully on Dec. 2, 2007, at Avalon Health Care. He was the husband of Barbara Colby and the late Elizabeth J. (Hubner) Whitehouse.
Born in Elizabeth, N.J, on Aug. 27, 1925, he was the son of the late Arch Whitehouse, who was a published author, and the late Ruth (Terhune) Whitehouse.
Mr. Whitehouse joined the American Field Service at age 18, and went overseas as an ambulance driver and stretcher bearer. He landed in southern Italy, moved northward with the British 8th Army, and continued into Poland and Holland. After retirement, he volunteered at the AFS headquarters in NYC to organize and preserve archives from the war years, then helped the AFS offices move to a new location.
Arthur graduated with honors from the New England School of Art. He later went on to have a very successful career in advertising.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Kent T. Whitehouse of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Douglas P. Whitehouse of Skaneateles, N.Y. He was the grandfather of Stephanie E. Whitehouse of Ithaca, N.Y., Tristan G. Whitehouse of Skaneateles, and Elizabeth Whitehouse of Ormond Beach, Fla. He also leaves the children of Barbara Colby, Laurel Stewart of Essex, Conn., Peter Colby of Warwick, N.Y., Jennifer Colby of South Kingstown, and their children.
He was the brother of the late Patricia Whitehouse.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m. in the United Congregational Church, 9 Castle Hill Road, Pawcatuck.
Calling hours are respectfully omitted.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Field Service to further promote world peace through youths. AFS Intercultural Programs, Inc., 71 West 23rd St, 17th Floor, N.Y., NY 10010 or the United Congregational Church, 9 Castle Hill Road, Pawcatuck, CT 06379.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly.

Dear Barbara, I was searching to sign the guest book for a nurse that I know that just passed away and I saw Arthur's name. I'm so sorry for your loss.I know Arthur had the same terrible disease as my dad and it is awful to watch the one you love suffer from this disease. Please tell all of your family I'm so sorry , and attached is my e-mail address maybe you can write and we can keep in touch. Arthur was a wonderful man and again so sorry for your loss.
