”The Water Man”
Gerry was born February 8, 1966, and died July 22, 2007, from a massive stroke.
Gerry is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Kathy; his children, Stephanie and Zachary, who meant more to him than anything in the entire universe; his mother, June McMinn; brothers, Scott and his wife Cherri Radford of Belton, Texas, and Bobby and his wife Amy Radford of Sacramento; sister, Nancy Fontaine of Eureka; 12 nieces and nephews; and his father and mother-in-law, Don and Betty Raffaelli. Gerry is also survived by many, many great friends, but particularly his very closest friend, Garrett Anderson and his family.
Gerry was predeceased by his sister, Laura Nessler in July of 1998.
Gerry loved youth sports around the area of all kinds. You could always find him watching his son Zac playing whatever sport was in season, golf, soccer, basketball and baseball, or watching high school football or basketball, HSU basketball, Crabs baseball - really, any sport that was going on, if he was available to attend, he did and he loved every minute of it. His favorite was basketball. If you were a perfect stranger, he would start talking to you about the sport of the day that was on his mind.
Gerry became particularly close to the people involved in the Redwood Empire Little League Program - kids and adults alike - he was a friend to all the kids and he will miss seeing them play, laughing with them and especially making them laugh.
Gerry worked for the last 11 years at Crystal Springs Bottled Water Company delivering water to thousands of homes and businesses in Humboldt and Del Norte County. His co-workers were his friends. He loved visiting with all of his customers, young and old, and always had a story when he got home about one customer or another. He loved meeting and becoming friends with everyone.
Gerry will always be remembered for his jovial laugh and good humor - you could hear him laughing from a mile away and it would make you laugh even if you didn’t know what he was laughing about!
The family would like to thank Dr. Osborne who was very caring and very patient. The nurses that helped Gerry in the ICU at St. Joseph Hospital, particularly, Pamela, Amy, Caroline, Sherry, Keni and Jenny. You took such amazing care of Gerry and you treated him with such kindness as though he was a family member of your own. It was greatly appreciated.
As Gerry would have wanted, there will not be a sad, dreary funeral. He always hated funerals and probably would not have come! Instead, as his kids have suggested, we will be having a celebration of his life on Thursday July 26, 2007, at 10:00 a.m., at Redwood Fields. Please wear your favorite shorts (because no matter what the weather or what the event, he always wore his) and your favorite baseball hat (because he never left home without one) and come tell us your favorite Gerry story. We are sure there will be many.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Gerry Radford Memorial Fund, c/o Coast Central Credit Union, 2650 Harrison Avenue, Eureka, CA 95501 in trust for his children, Stephanie and Zachary Radford; or to Redwood Empire Little League, P.O. Box 327, Cutten, CA 95534; or to a charity of your choice.
Arrangements were under the care of Pierce Mortuary, 707 H Street, Eureka, CA.

To the Radford Family
I am another water customer who was fortunate to have Gerry as a delivery man twice at two different addresses this past decade.
I can only barely begin to imagine the enormous, gaping void his departure has left in your life.
Grief is so difficult because there is no way around it, only through it. I am familiar with that pain, and my heart goes out to you all at this difficult time.
I have to share with you this little story of guilt:
July 17th was my last delivery from Gerry..........of course I didn't know that..........and I woke up that day in a mood of solitude. I didn't feel like talking to anyone, so I attached my check to the empty water bottle outside, and when I heard the truck I hid in the back bedroom while Gerry changed the bottles. (I assume it was Gerry.) (?) When I opened the paper and saw his face a few days later I was overcome with guilt!!! Sometimes our conversations went on and on.........and they were ALWAYS enjoyable.....I just didn't feel like dealing with people that day.
Sigh.
He was a very special man. I am happy to have known him.....even in the small way that I did.

To Gerry's Family,
Today is Wednesday, my day for water. Several years ago I started having deliveries every other Wednesday. Today, I asked the new guy, hey, where is my water guy? I thought he was going to cry, and then he said, "He died". I must have looked ridiculous because I couldn't believe those words. I called the office to ask, is this true? To find out that such a wonderful family has lost their husband, father and son, I have no words to express my deepest sympathy.
I have a large family daycare and just recently purchased a Childrens Center, I have known Gerry for years. He teased me on a regular basis, that I must be crazy to have all these children around. I finally figured out, he just thought I was crazy because I didn't make them into a baseball team.
Over the years I have felt like I knew all of you. Gerry spoke of each one of you with respect, love and humour. I admired him so much, because he was such a kind person. I rushed home this evening, because I was still in disbelief, and now reading his obituary, I know that it was our water guy, that will no longer make us laugh, compare our childrens stories, shake his head and run when a baby starts to cry or when he thinks I might hire him for an hour to take over. He won't tell me about his wife with those stars in his eyes that shows how much he loves her and how much respect he has for her. Not only did he talk about his wife, but his children. His children he was so very proud of.
There are no words that I can say to ease your pain, I just wanted you to know, that Gerry made a difference in my life with his kindness and making all of my children laugh.
I know you don't know me, but if there is anything that you need please just ask!

Kathy,Stephanie & Zac...I really don't know where to start. Gerry really had an amazing way with kids, every kid at the ball park knew Gerry or "BOJA" to some and LOVED him as well. Ryder absolutely love that man, he literally talked about "Boja" and said "Gerry's The Man!!" everyday to the point that I jokingly asked him just how much Gerry paid him to talk about him sooooo much!!! And Ryder will never eat another dill pickel seed with out thinking of his friend Boja and what Boja told him what those seeds would do to him... LOL... We will forever remember the night we had the dinner party out at our house and how Gerry stole the show with his stories, he had everybody in stitches. We will miss him very much and will always be here for you. He was a man whom left many, many wonderful memories behind for all and will never be forgotten. Please know you three are in our prays now and always...
With Love,

Dear Radford family. We have never met you in person, but we feel that we have known you for as long as Gerry delivered water to our home. You were ALWAYS mentioned in his conversations with us during each delivery. He was SOOOO proud of you three!
My husband and I and our 2 young grandchildren will miss him dearly. He was more than a "water man", he was a GREAT FRIEND of ours that brightened our day once every two weeks. We wished that we could have been present at his memorial but my husband had surgery scheduled thursday morning.
We will always miss, but surely remember the fun and memorable visits from your Dad and your husband.
May God keep you strong and safe during this most tragic time in your lives.
With our deepest regrets, Ken & Jeannie Gray (home delivery customers of Gerry's in Fortuna)

Kathy, Stephanie & Zac,I am so sorry for your loss, My heart goes out to each of you, as I know how much each one of you meant to Gerry.I have many memories of Gerry and the thing that stands out the most was his sense of humor he always found a way to make even a bad situation funny. I will always remember Stephanie's birthday party, when all of the kids wanted to go TP'ing and Gerry made it happen by allowing them to only stay on one side of the street and following behind them and cleaning it up, while the girls had no idea he was so close.I believe Gerry left many memories behind for you guys, he definetly lived life as a free spirit doing it his way and loving you guys more than anything and letting nothing get in the way of that. Just know that if you need anything we are here for you.
