On the morning of August 9th, 2007, Joseph William Dutra Sr. sadly lost his fight against cancer and went home to Heaven.
Joseph (Joe) was born December 21, 1937 to Joseph and Leona (Rhodes) Dutra. He attended Arcata High School and it was there he met the love of his life Beverly Alden. They started dating their sophomore year in high school and were married in 1956.
Soon after marrying, Joe joined the Air Force. Throughout the years, he shared with his family many stories of his time spent in Turkey.
After the Air Force, Beverly and Joe made a home in Arcata for their family of six children. He was involved with his children’s activities whether it was Boy Scouts, Little League, or St. Mary’s school and church. Joe was a dedicated, unselfish and loving father to his brood!
In 1972, Joe and Bev moved their family to Blue Lake. Joe became very active in the community with Dancing Club, the Blue Lake Fire Department, and as a board member at Blue Lake School. He spent countless hours volunteering his time and efforts.
Joe loved sports! He enjoyed playing baseball for the Arcata High Tigers and the Blue Lake Chicks and in his later years, fast-pitch softball. He brought his love of the sport to his children and grandchildren by giving of his time and expertise to coach many of them in their various leagues.
Joe’s last coaching job was at Arcata High School, where he coached both his daughter and granddaughter’s fast-pitch softball teams. It gave him great joy coaching them and their friends.
Besides Beverly, Joe’s other great love was the San Francisco 49ers! He spent many summers in the boiling heat of Rocklin watching them get ready for their new season. It didn’t matter if they were winning or losing- he was a Forty-Niner Faithful!
After living in Blue Lake for 33 years, the Dutra’s moved to their dream home in Mckinleyville. Joe looked forward to spending his golden years there with Bev.
Unfortunately, his dream wasn’t to be realized. Just as Joe was getting ready to retire from the mill that he had worked at for the last 38 years, he was diagnosed with cancer.
His cancer was aggressive and took Joe from us three months later. His loving and generous nature will be sadly missed, but never forgotten.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Beverly; children, Natalie and Kerry Houston of Blue Lake, Nicki and Larry Wright of Rouge River, Oregon, Joseph Jr. and Glenda Dutra of Eureka, Dustin and Dora Dutra of McKinleyville, and Brooke and Kris Clark of San Jose; grandchildren Amy Houston, Sean Houston and fiancé Amy Roberts, Kelly and Ray Ross, Shae and Ryan Marquez, Bobbi Wright, Jesse Wright, Joseph III and Lara Dutra, Curtis Dutra, Darby Dutra and Ashley, Melissa and William Clark; great-grandchildren Jakob Ross and Haven Dutra; sisters Rita Beck (Ralph) and Leona Teixiera; brothers-in law Bill Alden (Linda), Gale Alden (Barbara); sister-in-law Marian Ghera; and aunt Mary Mellow.
He is preceded in death by his parents Leona and Joseph Dutra; mother and father-in-law Alice and Oscar Alden; and his son Darren Jay Dutra.
A Rosary will be held Monday August 13, 2007, at 7:00 PM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Blue Lake. A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday August 14th at 1:30 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Arcata followed by an interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Donations can be made in Joe’s honor to Hospice of Humboldt, Mad River Community Hospital Home Health Service, or the American Cancer Society. The staff of these organizations worked hard to make Joe’s last days as comfortable as possible.
Arrangements are under the care of Paul’s Chapel in Arcata.

To the Dutra Family,
My sympathies to your family in this very difficult time. I went to grade school with Dustin at Blue Lake. Both Mr. and Mrs. Dutra went on our 8th grade trip to San Francisco and I remember Mr. Dutra's very positive personality. I also remember him umpiring my brother's Little League games. Your family is in my prayers.

Dear Bev: You have been constantly in my heart the last few months. I was so glad I got to see Joe, when the big flag was raised, and to give him and you a hug. I know life will never be the same for you. God will give you the strength to endure each day and Joe will be there to welcome you when you finally go home. To Natalie, you are the one of the "kids" that I feel the closest too....my prayers are with you at this time. And with your brothers and sisters, although I don't know them well. I know God will be with you all as you learn to live each day without that wonderful man. Billy, I know how close you felt to Joe, and I am sending you a special hug. My prayers will remain with all of you in the weeks ahead.

To Bev and Family,
Where does one start, when remembering Joe. Community service? Sports? 50 years of heading up our class reunion? Toby and I were both "team mates" of Joe's, over the years and are better for it. Our best to you, your family, in your time of mourning.

To Mr. Joe Dutra's family, I was very sad to hear of his passing. Joe was always very honest, hardworking family man and a great coach, umpire, and sports fans of any sport in our area. I remember asking Joe to umpire Little league all-star games for us many years ago and he would always come down, never taking any money and always saying," it was for the kids". He was a great coach of softball and I even remember him playing ball himself, he was very talented and always played the game to win, but win or lose always a gracious athlete. My prayers and thoughts go out to you Bev, Natalie/Kerry, Dustin/Dora, Sean(grandson) and the rest of your family.
Sincerely, Carlos Avelar

Bev and Family, I am so sorry for your loss. I'm saddened by the news of "Big" Joe's passing, yet at the same time a smile comes to my face remembering our years as next door neighbors. Although it has been many years since we last saw eachother, Joe has always held a special place in my heart - as have all of the Dutra Family. I send my deepest condolences to all of you. You're in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear family of Joe,
Joe was a wonderful man. He was our daughter, Heather Wild's softball coach during her high school years. Joe was charismatic and had the gift of pulling the best out of his team. He was supportive and would encourage his "girls", but was not one to mince words if there were corrections to be made!
Joe and Gerry Paul were gifted in their coaching and all of their teams remember them with love.(Well, maybe a time or two that wasn't true!)Joe was a super man taken too soon from all of us. I would just look at him and smile.
Sincerely,
Lois and Dick Wild

Beverly & Family; My heart aches for your loss. I worked with Joe in 1966 & 1967 and he was not only my boss but we became good friends. He treated me as an equal not someone who would look over my shoulder making sure I was doing my work. Joe was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather & great-grandfather. He meant so much to the countless kids and their parents while coaching & umpiring the many baseball games that he loved so much. Beverly and family, May God Bless All Of You with fond memories of your loved one as he will always be remembered by those who knew & loved him. Peace Be With All Of You. Love, Donna

Dear Bev & children: I cannot believe that you lost Joe so soon. He was just the greatest person and I treasure our high school memories together.I"ve been told that God gives us a certain number of days on this earth and when they are up, he'll takes us home. Joe used his days so wisely, and even tho your loss is so great I know there are angels surounding you and your family. I want you to know that I am praying for you and if you just need to talk, please call me. You two were my best friends in school and I still hold you dear. I love you. Patti Linville Strobel.
