Henry Joseph "Joe" Magne

Henry Magne Obituary

PALMETTO, FLA. - Henry Joseph "Joe" Magne, 88, of Moody Beach, Maine, formerly of Montpelier, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at his winter residence in Palmetto, Fla. surrounded by his loving family.

Joe was born on March 19, 1920, in Montpelier, the son of Romeo and Ernesta (Abiati) Magne.

He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1938. Shortly after graduation, Joe was granted a full football scholarship at the University of Vermont. Instead, he declined the scholarship and chose to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army Air Corp as a bomber pilot during World War II. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries he suffered on bombing missions during the war. He retired from the military with the rank of captain.

On June 28, 1945, he married Marie K. Flannery in a Catholic ceremony in Columbus, Miss. where he was stationed. Joe and Marie spend the next 33 years in Montpelier raising their loving children of two daughters and a son.

He worked for New England Telephone for 33 years. In 1978, Joe and Marie moved to Moody Beach, Maine, where they purchased Knox Haven By-the-Sea, a vacation cottage rental complex where they vacationed as a family for many years. In 1982, they closed the rental complex and built their dream home on their beachfront site where Joe lived up until the time of his death, taking great pride in tending his annual vegetable garden. As avid golfers, Joe and Marie spent many winters in Florida, South Carolina, and Arizona.

Joe's strength, and his wisdom, and his compassion guided and blessed his family and deeply touched his many friends, indeed, all those who met him on his life's path.

Joe's greatest joy in life was truly his family and he is survived by his daughters, Sandra B. Garner and her husband Darryl, of Tarpon Springs, Fla. and Sherry LaPrade and her husband Andre of Joe's Pond; son David J. Magne and his wife Colleen of Middlesex; grandchildren, Timothy and Michael Brown, Aaron and Ryan LaPrade, Meghan McGregor, Nathan Magne; great grandchildren Michael, Justin and Brandon Brown, Hailey and Hayden LaPrade, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

His parents and his wife Marie predeceased him.

Springtime services will be held in Montpelier with internment at Hope Cemetery in Barre.

David, Sherry, Sandra and families,

Please accept my condolences on Joe's passing.

Your Mom and Dad welcomed us to the beach as if they had known us thier entire life. I will miss catching up with Joe on the lawn, beach or driveway. We shared many stories of family, sports (he forgave my family for being Red Sox fans) and travel.

Moody Beach will not be the same.

With sympathy,

Michael Donovan
