CASTLEWOOD, Va. – William Earl "Blackie" Castle, 85, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at his home.
He was born in Castlewood, son of the late William C. and Nannie Marshall Castle. He was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, Castlewood, and was retired from the Department of Highways after 47 years of service. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II, and he was proud of his medals. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry, Floyd, Johnny and Calvin, and three sisters, Murel Jessee (his twin), Junie Shelley and Thelma Taylor. He was the last of his immediate family.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Kiser Castle; one beloved daughter, Darleen Castle Salyer and husband Layman A. of Portsmouth, Va.; grandson, Christopher A. Salyer; granddaughter, Andrea E. Salyer and friend Rex Musick; his good buddy, Gavin Salyer (great-grandchild); three sisters-in-law, Hazel Zagerman, Nancy Starcher and Bessie "Pete" Castle; one brother-in-law, Carl Sonny Taylor; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for William Earl "Blackie" Castle will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, in the Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, with the Rev. Leonard Ferguson officiating. Committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. Military rites will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and Virginia National Guard. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home and go in procession to the cemetery, leaving at 10:30 a.m. Monday.
Pallbearers will be nephews and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be friends from Calvary Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, in Castlewood Funeral Home, Castlewood.
The family wishes to give thanks to their church family and Pastor Ferguson for all their calls and prayers.
