Lou Silberman Obituary

Lou H. Silberman 91, of Tucson, passed away June 6, 2006. He was born in San Francisco on June 23, 1914, son of the late Lou H. and Myrtle (Mueller) Silberman. Mr. Silberman is survived by his daughter, Syrl Silberman and son-in-law, Saul Rubin of Arlington, MA; his granddaughter, Amanda Cohn of Los Angeles, CA and a nephew and niece. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen and daughter, Deborah Cohn. He was educated at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a BA in 1934 and at the Hebrew Union College, earning a BHebL in 1939, MHebL in 1941 and a DHebL in 1943. Professor Silberman taught at Vanderbilt University Divinity School from 1952 - 1980 where he was the Hillel Professor of Jewish Literature and Thought. From 1980 -2000 he was a Vis. and Adj. Professor of Judaic Studies at the U of A; specific areas of study included the Hebrew Bible, New Testament, Apocrypha and Post-biblical Studies. Professor Silberman was a member of the Society of Biblical Literature of which he was president in 1982, American Association of Rabbis and the Society of New Testament Studies and the Jesus Seminar. A graveside service will be held 9:00 a.m., Thursday, June 8, in the Congregation Anshei Isreal section of Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Arizona Friends of Chamber Music Society, P.O. Box 40802, Tucson, AZ 85717 in the name of Professor Lou Silberman.
