I had the strangest experience this morning, I opened the browser on my phone to look something up and in among other links was one to the article posted in the Tucson Citizen. https://tucson.com/news/local/leukemia-fells-hard-charging-tucson-marine/article_6970a4e3-9969-57f9-abde-cc72f4a4f090.html
I read the article, I am so proud to call myself Joshua's dad, he was a unique individual who let nothing get in his way. It's hard to believe this October it will be 12 years since he passed, I think of you often Joshua and pray that God looks favorably on you. One of my greatest gifts was the times you and I spent alone together during your last year of life, I cherish every moment we had together.

No way it has been that long... 41 years loved and in our hearts, yet 29 forever. I love that our family, including my children that barely knew him, speak of him often. He is forever in our hearts! My kids remind me every time they see a yellow butterfly! Happy Birthday Joshua! You are loved and remembered!

When I first met him it was "corpral Holden". I met him in early January, the week we were to deploy for Iraqi Freedom. After 8 months/24 hours a day in the Sec platoon at Camp Viper I saw what an exceptional Marine he was. Myself, and Rob Black were better people for knowing him. Stand fast and guard the gates of heaven brother, you've earned your place.

Today is Sept 11, 2011. I thought of you as soon as I woke up this morning. It is because of this day that I remember you. I was one of the funeral directors at the mortuary that handled your arrangements. You and your family have stayed in my thoughts and prayers ever since. I sat with your mom at Eric Hite's funeral, right by your gravesite. I plan to go there today with my fiance. He is also a former marine who is serving in the Army National Guard. I hope wherever you are now is a beautiful place. God bless you and your family.

I was looking for some of the old gang from the Corps via a social network online. Linked up with folks and learned about your passing. You and I were roommates in for a long time when we served together with Lima 3/7. I'll never forget the stupid stuff we would do to pass the time and make work seem fun. My only regret in life after 34 years is that I lost contact with you, I didn't know you were ill, and I never made it to see you before you died nor did I attend your funeral. For those things I am truly sorry Josh. S/F brother....

Joshua, I think about you most days and my heart aches, I miss you so very much. I know that you would want me to keep my life going and enjoy it, I will work on moving in that direction. I love you Joshua always ....

Nostalgia hit me recently and I was searching for others from our OIF 3-4 deployment. I ran across SSG Holden's entry on the web. I was in his platoon before they broke our platoon up and was briefly his roommate in Iraq.
When I first met him I thought he was too hardcore. I later discovered his eye for detail and support of the troops was unfaltering and well experienced. While his humor could be rather dry and at first hard to recognize, I cannot count the times he latter made me laugh and will never forget his own unmistakable laugh.
When times were most stressful he would appear in formations or at meetings with lens-less spectacles slightly askew taped in the middle and hold this vacant stare with his mouth slightly ajar suspiciously waiting until someone would notice. Then we would all laugh followed shortly but his own deep guttural giggle. All a little more able to handle the day more lighthearted. He knew when action was required and when comedy was best.
To the family and friends, I offer my condolences. But I am sure that a man that great is now off to bigger and better things.

Today I was thinking of how young Josh was and how he fought for our freedom. Why, because as he said someone needed to serve why not me. He gave it all so that we could have our cozy life here in the USA. Thank you Josh and I miss you.

Dear Holdens,
You are in my thoughts and prayers today as is Joshua. I will never forget the times spent idolizing Josh as a child, from building a lego boat to going for rides in his race car. Words cannot explain what a great person Josh was, and he is missed dearly. With Love, Paul

May you & your family take comfort in the memories of your wonderful, loving son. Know that our thoughts & prayers are with you during this difficult time. We met Josh through our daughter Erin in 2004. We instantly liked him & have wonderful memories of his visit here to Illinois. He was a warm, loving, caring, young man with a great sense of humor which we loved. Our thoughts & prayers have been with him during his second deployment to Iraq & then through his illness. We were devastated by the news of his passing. Please take comfort in the fact that Josh is now your guardian angel doing what he did best as a soldier: Watching over his family & friends. God Bless Him!!!

I'am very sorry for your loss. I served with SSG Holden in Bagadad, Iraq. He was one the best NCO's in the platoon. Always motivated, always ready to complete the mission. I will always remember him as the best example of what a NCO should be. I will never forget his toughness, professionalism, leadership. I hope these words will comfort you, that he is one of the best that America has to offer.

Dear Holden Family,
Though your hearts are heavy (my heart breaks for you)...how proud you must be of your remarkable wonderful young man. I didn't know him, and yet...I am so proud of him, and so thankful to know that there are such marvelous wonderful men being raised up in our Country, still today. Thank you for raising this wonderful young man, who had so many choices he could have made and yet chose the 'right' ones. We will never understand the Lord's timing, until the day we stand before Him .....and ask...why? Until then I pray that He comforts you all, holds you in His arms, and reminds you daily of all that He gave you, even though it was for such a short time. Thank you for raising a child that our whole world can be proud of. Thank you for sharing him with all of us. Thank you for sharing him with our Country. May the Lord comfort your spirit in the days ahead. My prayers are with you. Sincerely, Barbara Parker

I served with your son Ssg. Holden in Iraq in 3rd platoon. His early departure had us all worried because we did not know what had happend. When we found out our hearts grieved for him and his recovery. I am saddened to know that he could not overcome this battle as he did so many before. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and my departed brother in arms.

To the Holden family,
I served with Josh in Iraq when he was apart of the Tucson Marine Unit. He always cracked me up when I saw him. He always had some funny sarcastic remark, which lightened our day. We played many a spade game together. It was an honor to serve with him. Semper Fi.

Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd,
I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
He restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this most difficult time.

SSG Holden,
I am proud to have served with you overseas. You are a world-class NCO and an outstanding soldier. The world is less of a place without you in it. But I am glad to know that you have taken your place among the angels in Heaven. Your memory will last as long as I have breath, to this I swear.
"Almighty God, whose will it is that we be leaders of men, hear us as we come to you for guidance in this awesome responsibility. Let us never forget our duty in the men whom we lead. May we instill in them the qualities of loyalty, integrity, and duty. Grant us patience in dealing with the mistakes of our fellow man. Let us never forget that no man is perfect, but that perfection for fragile humans is trying each day to be better than the day before. Give us courage O Lord, in the face of danger, keep us pure in heart, clean in mind, and strong in purpose. Remind us that wisdom is not granted in an hour, a day, or in a year but it is a process that continues all the days of our lives. Keep ever before us our goal which is not to perpetrate war, but to safeguard peace and preserve your great gift to man, Freedom. May you always be near to guide us in our decisions, comfort us in our failures, and keep us humble in our successes. We ask your devine blessings and leadership as we discharge the honor and responsibility of leading men in the service of our country. Walk close to us always, our Father, that we may not fail. Amen"
