I love you Uncle Don. We all miss you so much. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about you/or that day. I honk for you everytime I pass that crossway. It breaks my heart to know I can't come over and see your face or have you give me a hard time. I have learned a lot from the accident. I miss you millions. I am excited to see you again one day.

Dear Bonnie, Dawn, John & Christine:
You may not remember me, but our families used to be close in Radcliff, Kentucky days back in the early/mid 80s. I was a year ahead of Dawn in school. Our families used to visit each other's homes on Sunday afternoons sometimes after church at St.Christopher's. If I remember right, I think your family even stayed with us at our house briefly for a time.
I am so sorry to learn of Don's death! I remember him and Bonnie as being the sweetest people. I remember I was in Boy Scouts with John.
Just an update: I am now living in Georgia. Been married for 9 years and have a beautiful 5-year-old daughter. Her name is Kayla Renee, and my wife's name is Shannon. My parents, Pat and Brenda Flemming moved from Kentucky in 1990 to Europe. They moved to Virginia in 1997, and my mother still lives there. My own father died at 65 in August 2006. I miss him every day. My mother and brothers are holding up okay. It's still hard, so I can understand. I am on facebook and would like to hear from you sometime. In the meantime, take care and know that I am so sorry to learn of this sad event! God bless you Bonnie, Dawn, John, & Christine!

Love,
The Flemming Family

Dear Bonnie and children.
When there is an unexpected death in the family everyone is filled with so much sadness.And a tragic death like this makes it even worse. One of the regrets that I have is that our families have, over the years, drifted apart as we all have become so engrossed in our own lives;working and raising our families. Most of my memories of Donald are when he was very little - I was 17 years old when he was born but I do remember him as being such a cute and lovable little boy.We have all missed so much by not keeping in touch. I am so sorry that my surgery kept me from being with you at the funeral but I have kept Donald and all of you in my prayers since I got the awful phone call.
With Love,
Elise Marie

SAFELY HOME

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.

All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely hone in Heaven at last.

Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh! but Jesus' love illumined
Every dark and fearful glade.

And He came Himself to meet me
In that way so hard to tread;
And with Jesus' arm to lean on,
Could I have one doubt or dread?

They you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still:
Try to look beyond earth's shadows.
Pray to trust our Father's Will.

There's work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
do it now. while life remaineth -
You shall rest in Jesus' land.

When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

FOLLOW YOUR STAR
(WRITTEN BY YOUR SISTER DONNA COHOON)

YOUR BOYISH SMILE AND TWINKLING EYES, TOLD ME OF YOUR TENDERNESS.
YOUR MANNER TOLM ME SO MUCH, TOO,
ABOUT HOW YOU'D BEEN RAISED.

AMIDST THAT STORMY SERVICE LIFE,
A GENTLE WOMAN STOOD, FOR YOU HAD BEEN TAUGHT TO USE YOUR STRENGTH, AND TEMPER IT WITH TENDERNESS.

STAND TALL, YOUNG MAN, AND LOOK AHEAD, YOU'VE STOOD UPON YOUR FIRST DAY, THE REST OF YOUR LIFE LAY AHEAD.

LOOKED FORWARD TOO, WITH EAGERNES, YOU HAD SO MUCH TO GIVE. DEFIANT, YES, AT TIMES YOU WERE, INDEPENDENT YOU WERE TOO.

YOU SET YOUR GOAL IN FRONT OF YOU, THE WHOLE WORLD WAS YOUR GLEN. YOU ALWAYS LOOKED UP TO THE STARS, NOW FOLLOW THEM AGAIN.

YOU CHOSE YOUR GAME, LET NO ONE ELSE, YOUR STAR WILL RISE, SO KEEP IT BRIGHT.

ONE DAY, I'LL LOOK OUT THERE AND SEE, ONE STAR MUCH BRIGHTER THAN THE REST, A GENTLE, STRONG AND TENDER MAN, WHO PASSED MY WAY AND LEFT HIS MARK.

MY MOTHER WAS A BIT OF A WRITER AND I HAVE A COLLECTION OF THOSE WRITINGS. I FOUND ONE THAT I WANTED TO SHARE WITH AUNT BONNIE AND HER FAMILY.

Aunt Bonnie & family,

I was saddened when we got the news of Uncle Donald's accident and our prayers go out to all of our family who will mourn his loss. I was on-duty responding to a vehicle accident at the time, strange feeling. As the family grew older and went their different ways the family grows apart. The family will always be in our hearts. I have found even though my mother (Donna Cohoon) passed away she is always with me in spirit. That will be true with Uncle Donald. He is in a peaceful place now with Grandpa, Grandma and Mom wathcing over all of us. As one Veteran to another Veteran I salute Donald and the family for his and your sevice to the Nation. Our love and prayers go out to all of our family.

Dear Mrs. Bonnie,

You do not know me; my name is Tania Sprague. Your husband, Donald, works with my husband Ron Sprague, at UP-North Plastic (Cottage Grove). When my husband came home that day, he told me what happens. Immediately, my tears comes out off my eyes, it was so heart breaking to heard that your husband fight a disease, and now this happens… so suddenly, in a very unexpected way. We are very sorry for your loss; and we are praying for his soul. Your dearly husband is already with God, surrender by Angels. Remember all the great memories you had together, and your love for each other, to keep going the time you will live with us, until you see your husband again, in Heaven.
I am asking my family and friends, in Venezuela, to pray for your husband's soul. His spirit always will be with you and your family. God blesses you all!

You are in our hearts and our prayers, on this moment of loss and nostalgia for what you both had, each other.

Aunt Bonnie & family,

I was so saddened when we got the news of Uncle Donald's accident and our prayers go out to all of our family who will mourn his loss. In this day and time we sometimes forget the importance of family and how their lives effect all of ours. My fondest memories of Uncle Donald was when he was young and he lived with us in Florida. He was like another kid in our family and was treated such. When I got married he came to the wedding in his Army uniform with his smokey the bear hat. He looked so handsome and was so proud to wear that uniform. I was very proud of him as well. Our lives get busy and everyone ends up clear accross the country with problems and issues in their own family but we always keep our extended family in our hearts and memories. Please know that he is in a good place and he is at peace and waiting to see all of us. He is safe at home with God now and with his parents and sister. They are always there to watch over us and to guide us on our way through life. Please keep in your heart the wonderful memories of how he touched everyone's life. Our love and prayers go out to all of our family.

Love Always,

“A Veteran Died Today”
(Author Unknown)

He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was thinning fast, and he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past. Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done. In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, everyone. And 'tho sometimes, to his neighbors, his tales became a joke, all his buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke. But we'll hear his tales no longer, for he has passed away, and the world's a little poorer, for a Veteran died today.

No, he won't be mourned by many, just his children and his wife. For he lived an ordinary, very quiet sort of life. He held a job and raised a family, quietly going on his way; and the world won't note his passing; 'tho a Veteran died today.

When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state, while thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great. Papers tell of their life stories, from the time that they were young, but the passing of a Veteran, goes unnoticed, and unsung. Is the greatest contribution, to the welfare of our land, someone who breaks his promise and cons his fellow man? Or the ordinary fellow, who in times of war and strife, goes off to serve his Country and offers up his life? The politician's stipend and the style in which he lives, are sometimes disproportionate, to the service that he gives. While the ordinary Veteran, who offered up his all, is paid off with a medal and perhaps a pension, small.

It's so easy to forget them, for it is so long ago, that our Dons and Jims and Johnnys, went to battle, but we know. It was not the politicians, with their compromise and ploys, who won for us the freedom that our Country now enjoys. Should you find yourself in danger, with your enemies at hand, would you want some politician, with his every waffling stand? Or would you want a Veteran, who has sworn to defend, his home, his kin, and Country, and would fight until the end?

He was just a common Veteran and his ranks are growing thin, but his presence should remind us, we may need his likes again. For when countries are in conflict, then we find the Military's part, is to clean up all the troubles, that the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honor, while he's here to hear the praise, then at least let's give him homage, at the ending of his days. Perhaps just a simple headline, in the paper that might say:

OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
FOR A VETERAN DIED TODAY.

My deepest sympathy to all of Don's family and friends. My mind keeps racing with all the experiences I had with him. I remember the time I was in a minor car accident and he was there to take me to the hospital to make sure I was alright eventhough it was late at night. When you were part of his "inner circle" you had someone to count on and be there throughout the ups and downs. I had great times with him playing volleyball, golfing, playing cards, games or at family functions. It is a terrible tradegy that a family must go through something like this. My thoughts and prayers go out to Bonnie, Dawn, John, Chris and all of their families.
