David George Pierce

1954 - 2023

David George Pierce, a longtime resident of Ocilla, Georgia, died September 27, 2023 at the age of 68.

David was born in Ocilla on November 21, 1954, to Velma and G.W. Pierce. He enjoyed his childhood in Ocilla, where he played sports, including football and track. He especially enjoyed his time with family.

However, David's abilities and unique skills at writing were apparent early in life, and he continued his passion for writing by receiving a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Georgia in 1976. David spent a majority of his career as a writer and editor with the Albany Herald. He received numerous awards in journalism from the Georgia Press Association. He published his first book, Our Boys, in 2018 documenting the history of Irwin County football.

David was widely known among his family, friends, and anyone he met as being a kind and giving person. He was strongly devoted to his loving wife, Lucy. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, traveling, attending church, and writing, and of course his Georgia Bulldogs. People who knew him best would say that he was always present and there for his family. David was a source of calmness that reached everyone who met him. He was the most giving person not only to his family and friends, but to any strangers he met on the street.

He was a devoted follower of Christ and was always willing to help and care for anyone who needed it. He will be deeply missed by friends, family, and all who knew him. No one would doubt his love for his wife, his children, and his grandchildren.

David is survived by his wife, Lucy Pierce; brother, Wayne Pierce; his son, Ben Pierce; daughter-in-law, Erica Pierce; and five grandchildren, Tyler (23), Talitha (16), Timothy (15), Tabitha (12), and Titus (8); his nephews, Cam, Ray, Clay, Justin, and Jordan; his nieces, Emily and Aimee; and countless extended family.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 29 from 6-8pm, at Paulk Funeral Home in Ocilla, Georgia. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 30 at 4pm at Paulk Funeral Home in Ocilla, Georgia. Interment to follow at Old Valley Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Ocilla, Georgia.
