Russell Rapoza Obituary

Russell P. Rapoza of Plymouth died Nov. 9, in Tufts Medical Center in Boston. He was the beloved husband of Maureen A. (Kelly) Rapoza; loving father of Russell Rapoza Jr. of Weymouth, Kelly Rapoza of Quincy, Kelly Bacon of North Attleboro, Nancy Bauer of Mendon, Susan Meomartino of Amesbury and Katie Meomartino of Plymouth; beloved brother of Linda McAlduff of Plymouth; uncle of Kenneth Renaud II of Plymouth. Also survived by 10 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Russell was born in Plymouth, Aug. 19, 1951, a son of the late Joseph and Janice (Barrett) Rapoza. Russell was an accomplished pianist, talented composer and musical director. Mr. Rapoza grew up in North Plymouth and was educated in the Plymouth Public Schools until grade seven. At that time he attended Sacred Heart Junior Senior High School in Kingston, where he excelled in the musical programs. In 1965, as a freshman, Russell was the recipient of the Plymouth Philharmonic Scholarship, and continued to study piano under the tutelage of the Sisters of Divine Providence. After achieving many musical milestones during high school, Mr. Rapoza graduated in 1969. Russell studied classical music at Boston Conservatory during the early 1970s, and graduated with a double-major in piano and music education. Mr. Rapoza started playing the piano at the age of 5, and began studying formally at 6 years old. By the time he was in junior high, Russell was the organist at St. Marys Church in North Plymouth, and formed a band of his peers to entertain audiences in local restaurants, and for the annual Holy Ghost Fiesta celebrations. Russell was very proud of this Portuguese heritage. Mr. Rapoza continued in the entertainment business, created and played in a variety of successful, commercial bands, and started his own entertainment agency that supplied function facilities, corporate venues, hotels and restaurants with a variety of singers, musical bands, and comedic acts. During the same time period, Mr. Rapoza also continued his liturgical musical career through the Archdiocese of Boston. He became music director for different parishes, including St. Colemans in Brockton, St. Edwards in Medfield, and currently was directing the musical programs at Resurrection Church in Hingham. Russell composed original liturgical songs for a variety of musical instruments, and created arrangements for the choirs and soloists. Mr. Rapoza also taught private music lessons at each parish, opened the Russ Rapoza Studio for the Performing Arts in Walpole, and was currently teaching piano at his recently opened Plymouth Piano Academy at the Plymouth Center for the Arts on North Street. Russell was proud to be implementing a full instrument program, including vocals, at the Plymouth Piano Academy, as well as, be a part of the performing arts and arts community in his hometown of Plymouth. Mr. Rapoza was an inspiration to his students and his musical peers, friends. And loved ones and will be missed by all. Funeral Mass Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Church of the Resurrection, Rte. 228, in Hingham. I'm thinking Russell's eternal reward will be measured in how many people he entertained at weddings and functions throughout his life. Those are eternal memories, and his memory in Plymouth will be cherished forever. Everybody knows and loves Russ Rapoza and will miss him!

My husband, Pete, and I followed Russ in his very early years of appearing with his band at Ernie's and The Governor Carver Motel. We became such good friends that after we moved to VT, when our daughter was married, we brought him and the band up to the White River Jct. Holiday Inn to play at their reception. They made quite a hit in their white tuxes. I'll always remember his music.

Maureen,
I sincerely value the memories of the times Russell had me work on Chopin, Beethoven, Bach, etc. He taught me much in the short time we worked together. I hope he knows I was on my way back to taking lessons with him and I hope he knows how special of an instructor I thought he was. I will not find someone as patient and dedicated as him and that is just a small indication of how good a man he was. I am stunned and saddened to hear of his passing. I regret the time I took off from working with him and wish to have had the chance to say goodbye to him. My thoughts are with you and your family. If I am unable to attend the services please know it is not from a lack of trying.
Sincerely,
Robert Demerjian

It is not so often you meet a man who impacted your life in such a short period of time; for that to happen is special, but for it to happen to a child, I believe, is extraordinary. Russell was that man for my children, they considered him a part of our family, and will miss him terribly.
Maureen, may you find some comfort in knowing that he was so loved and touched so many lives with his love for life, faith and music.

Condolences to all of Russell's family. I remember Russell from my childhood and would bump in to him from time to time over the years. We would stop and chat about things and I would always ask him about his music. That always made his face light up.

I am so sad to hear of Russ's passing. He was a true friend and a great musician. If it were not for him my son would not be the great musician he is today. I sang with Russ at Holy Ghost for the many years he was there and remained friends long after. God Bless his family.

The short time that I've known Russell through working at Resurrection Parish, I've witnessed a truly courageous person. An incredibly talented and dedicated musician, Russell was also a truly decent man. For the past few months I have been surrounded by choir members, musicians, and clergy who have held Russell in high regard and respect. I am grateful for the opportunity to have known him. My prayers go out to your entire family.
