Thomas Nolen Wright Obituary

Service for Thomas Nolen Wright, 80, will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Parker Memorial Baptist Church, 1204 Quintard Ave., Anniston, with Dr. Mac Amis officiating. Burial will follow in the Cedar Creek Church Cemetery, 13019 Co. Rd. 19, Heflin, AL. Family will receive friends from 5-7 this evening at Miller Funeral Home. Mr. Wright passed away at the Cleburne County Nursing Home on Wednesday, March 8, 2017. Tom was born May 13, 1936 in Anniston. He graduated from Cleburne County High School, Class of 1954, and was a graduate of the University of Alabama, Class of 1958, where he was a proud member of the Million Dollar Marching Band and the Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. Tom was ordained a deacon in Parker Memorial in 1971 and faithfully served as Sunday School Dept. Director, taught 7th and 8th grade boys, and served as Church Treasurer. He began his career as Vice President/Comptroller for Chastain Roberts Grocery (now Supervalu) for 12 years before he became Finance Director for City of Anniston in 1974. He later accepted a dual role as City Manager/Finance Director until his retirement in 1998. He and his wife, Frances, loved to travel across the United States and especially to European countries. His favorite sport was his love for water skiing on Lake Gerald. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Frances Riddle Wright; two sons, William 'Bill' Thomas (Tonia), of Oxford, and Bruce Patrick (Tonya), of Heflin; grandchildren, Heather Paige, Shae Leanna, Alyssa Brianne, Autumn Gabrielle and Nolen Patrick Wright; sister-in-law, Clara Roach, and a niece, Cheryl (Rob) Small. Tom was preceded in death by an infant sister and his parents, Asa Asbury and Launa Turner Wright. Pallbearers will be Bill Wright, Bruce Wright, Clois Moore, Farrell Turner, Eric Turner, and Wyatt Genge. Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. and Mrs. John Chastain, Mr. and Mrs. Mac Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Gregg, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Thomas, and the Sunday School Classes of Sam Ledbetter and Pete Morgan. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to one of the following in his memory: Anniston Lion's Club, P.O. Mr. Wright was a great mentor to me during my 5 years with the City of Anniston. He gave me valuable experience that allowed me to follow in his footsteps in becoming a city manager.
