Gerald J. Owens

AGE: 80 • Freehold

Gerald J. Owens, 80, of Freehold died on Saturday, June 2nd at home. He was born in Charleston, SC, and lived in many states before settling in New Jersey. He was a U.S. Navy veteran from 1950-1954 and served in the Korean War. In August of 1955, he started his career at Bell Laboratories at the Whippany, NJ location and was an engineer and member of the technical staff. He worked on the Telstar project and received several patents during his career and he retired in 1989 from the Holmdel, NJ location. He was an avid baseball and football fan. He enjoyed traveling, photography and wood and metal work.

He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn, married 48 years, and a daughter, Barbara Davis. Surviving are his son Steven and wife Tracey of Freehold; daughter, Carol Catala and husband Daniel Heinze of Axton, VA, Scott Davis of Manassas, VA and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, NJ on Thursday, June 7th from 11am to 12:30pm. Funeral services will be held the same day at 1:30pm at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
