John Koenig Obituary

John David Koenig

AGE: 87 • Rumson

John David Koenig, age 87, passed away August 25, 2016 after suffering a stroke. Most recently he was a resident of Bayside Manor (BM) in Keansburg, NJ. He loved the staff and his fellow residents at BM and they became a second family to him. A lifelong Catholic, he attended mass and received the eucharist just before falling ill. A long-time resident of Rumson and Red Bank, he was born at Doctors Hospital, New York City (NYC) -- the only child of George A. Koenig, M.D. and Helen Callaghan Koenig. He graduated from Xavier High School in NYC, St. Peter's College, Jersey City and Fordham University Law School. John served a combat tour as an Artillery officer in the United States Marine Corps. He fought in the Nevada Triangle (Korea) in March 1953. The infantry company he was assigned to lost seventy-two (72) Marines killed or wounded from a total strength of one hundred and forty seven (147) men. He never forgot the incredible acts of heroism and bravery of the Marines and Corpsmen with whom he fought and served. He began his legal career with Gasser & Hayes, and spent a fifty (50) + year career as a Trust and Estate Attorney. He is a former member of Beacon Hill Country Club, Shrewsbury Sailing Club, Oceanport and Monmouth Beach Bath and Tennis Club. He was a lifelong reader and History Buff, particularly Military History taking his family on numerous travels to historic sites and battlefields. He was proud that all five of his sons were Eagle Scouts. He lived by the motto: Once a Marine, Always a Marine. Three of his sons became Marines.

He is survived by his former wife, Nancy Koenig McCoy of Little Silver, NJ, his sons: John (Jessica) of Vienna, VA, Thomas (Teresa) of Del Ray Beach, FL, George (Denis) of Atlanta, GA, William (Tara) of Williamsburg Brooklyn, NY and Peter of Rumson, NJ, his grandchildren: Thomas and John of Vienna, VA, George and Caitlin of Philadelphia PA; Tricia (Kyle) Ricketts of Atlanta, GA, Ann Koenig of Atlanta, GA; Nancy, Courtney, Laura, Tripp and Jack Koenig of Atlanta, GA, Alexander, Olivia and Vivienne Koenig (Williamsburg Brooklyn, NY); and his great grandchildren: Emily and Grace Ricketts of Atlanta, GA.

My sincere condolences to John's family and friends.
He had his veteran oral history recorded by me back when the Project first began, in 2001. I remember his Korea service experiences and have them here, if anyone is interested. God bless and rest in peace, John.

A MARINE COMES HOME...

Few, Earn the Title, "United States Marine"...
Once Earned, They are a Marine Forever...

When they die, their Honor Clean, they appear before Heavens Gates and see two signs, Eternal Peace and Marines...
Below the sign Marines, is a path.
The Marine follows the path to a Quonset Hut, knocks three times and enters...
Behind a table stand two Marines, Colonel Lewis B. Puller and Sergeant Major Dan Daly...
The SgtMaj. hands the Marine a Quill Pen and Bottle of Red black Ink...
The Marine signs his name to the Duty Roster, after which his Heavenly Robes Fade, replaced by Standard Marine Corps Issue...
The Marine Smiles, and does a Right Face out the Hatch to The Yellow Footprints, to Muster as The USMC Devil Dog Division...

The Marines purpose is clear, to fight the forces of Evil for all Eternity under The Command of the ultimate Commander-In-Chief, GOD ALMIGHTY...

"By The Grace Of God,
And A Few Marines,
It's Good To Be Home"...

Semper Fi. John...
A Marine Corps Family...
