Thomas Welstead Obituary

Thomas Paul Welstead

AGE: 74 • Shrewsbury

Thomas Paul Welstead, 74, of Shrewsbury, passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2012, surrounded by his family, at Meridian Nursing and Rehabilitation in Shrewsbury. Thomas was very active his whole life and touched the hearts of many people. He grew up in Matawan, where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Muriel Baker. Thomas and Muriel settled in Shrewsbury to raise their three children. Thomas was an accomplished professional welter weight boxer at the young age of 20. In 1957, he was named fighter of the year. He later pursued his lifelong career as an ironworker with Local #45 and retired in 2000 at the age of 62 after 34 years. The most important thing in the world to him was spending time with his grandchildren and being the loving and devoted pop pop he was. He will be remembered as a man who put all others needs above his own and will be forever loved.

Thomas was predeceased by his parents, John Eugene and Eleanor Marie (McGiff) Welstead; and a brother, Michael Richard. He is survived by his beloved wife, Muriel, with whom he enjoyed 54 loving years; three children, Jeffrey and wife Cindy of Port Reading, Kathleen Smith and husband Joseph of Spring Lake Heights, and Judith of Shrewsbury; five grandchildren, Joseph, Shayne, Erin, Jimmy and Sandra; great-grandchildren, Bryan, Kaylee and Danica; brothers, Jackie and wife Maureen of GA, Edward and wife Mary of Shrewsbury, and Gregory of TX; sisters, Patricia Marsh of NJ and Eleanor Skully of FL; and a sister-in-law, Joan Welstead of Atlantic Highlands.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 19 at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday, April 20 at St. James RC Church, Red Bank. Interment will follow at St Joseph's Cemetery, Keyport. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made in Thomas' memory to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011. Just wanted Tom's family to know that his brother Mike is still remembered fondly. We both lived on Ravine Drive and walked many days to school together. He sadly passed in our senior year at MHS.

So very sorry to hear the sad news of Mr. Welstead's passing. My condolences to Mrs. Welstead, Jeff, Kathy and Judy. What a great guy he was. He always put a smile on my face whenever I would see him just because he was so...himself, so easy to talk to and so absolutely genuine. And funny! Some of his stories were truly classic. Plus, such a caring person who would always be there for friends and family alike.I am fortunate to have known him. He will be sorely missed.
