David MARTIN Obituary

MARTIN, Dr. David Edward David Edward Martin, 78, of Decatur, Georgia, died February 28, 2018. Son of Edward Henry Martin and Lillie Luckman Martin and originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin, "Dr. Dave", passed away on February 28 after a decades long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, David is survived by his sister, Kathleen (Kay) Strey, nephew John Little, niece Deb Makovsky, great-niece Krissy Sandley and god-daughter Zoe Sandley. Martin, a Regents Professor emeritus at Georgia State University, was internationally recognized for his interdisciplinary contribution to distance running. His professional activity as a researcher, coach, statistician and advocate provided him with an amazing breadth and depth of focus that enabled him to impact the sport in profound ways. For almost two decades Martin was simultaneously an active member of USA Track & Field (marathon development chair), the American Physiological Society, the International Society of Olympic Historians, the Track and Field Writers of America, the Association de la Presse Sportive (AIPS), the Association of Track and Field Statisticians (chief compiler), the Association of International Marathons (chief statistician) and the International Marathon Medical Directors Association (IMMDA). David authored five books [The Marathon Footrace (1979), The High Jump Book, (1987), Training Distance Runners (1991), The Olympic Marathon (2000), Better Training for Distance Runners (1997)] and over a hundred articles in the area of athletics, exercise science and sports medicine. His expertise has enabled scores of coaches and athletes to better understand the science of human athletic performance in order to improve training and racing strategies. His most coveted achievement was a research program he created for the 2004 Athens Olympics that helped propel Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor to a silver and bronze medal in the Olympic marathon. "Dr. Dave" will be forever remembered by his friends for his wit, wisdom and infinite modesty. He is an unsung hero of US distance running whose legacy will live on for any marathoner asking themselves, "Just how fast can I run?" Services for Dr. Martin will be held Sunday March 4, 2018, in the chapel of A.S. Turner & Sons, Decatur Ga. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Atlanta Track Club: Dr. David Martin Memorial Fund.

Miss our conversations Dave.

I had the opportunity to work with David in the 1980s while I was at GSU. He was a fine physiologist and exercise scientist, and he will be missed.

I will keep his family and friends in my prayers.

I forgot how many times I flew out to Atlanta, Georgia to be tested at Dr. Dave's Exercise Physiology Lab, staying at his place called Stone House in Decatur, Georgia (Dr. Dave told many stories about that Stone House as it was the last building standing during some big fire in Atlanta during the Civil War), heading off to some greasy breakfast diner after testing and more running, showing parts of the Olympic Marathon Course in Atlanta before 1984. He provided me tremendous insights on how to improve my marathon performance through proper training. I remember bringing a case of Coors on each visit when Coors Beers was not sold east of the Mississippi in the 1980's (imagine a case of Coors checked as a piece of luggage in a Nike duffle bag and not one burst!). At every interaction whether it be on the phone or in person, Dr. Dave would always say: How you doing guy? in his own Dr. Dave scrappy tone of voice! I can still remember being on the USA Marathon Team competing in Hiroshima, Japan back in 1983 and Dr. Dave was the Head Coach; on the day he left Atlanta, Georgia for the 20 + hours of flying he was in a very serious auto accident and still made his flight due to his dedication to the Team. Dr. Dave has always been a World Class people person/listener but never once flaunted nor tooted his horn that he was a World Class Professor, a World Class Author, a World Class Exercise Physiologist. Dr. Dave was the kind of Friend, Mentor, and Leader everyone wants and needs in their life. There are not that many people out there like Dr. Dave and personally I feel very fortunate and indebted to have found such a great Friend, Mentor and Leader. Dr. Dave will be missed but he leaves a tremendous legacy behind to those he touched. Thank you Dr. Dave. Thank you so much.
