Harold Carroll Obituary

Harold N. Carroll, also known to many as Deacon Carroll and Deacon Harold, died Friday May 27, 2005 at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital. He was 89.

A longtime resident of the area, he was the proprietor of the Emperial 400 Motel in Newburgh, N.Y. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and A.A.R.P., and former member of the VFW. Harold was a First Sergeant of the 129th Infantry Regiment of the 37th Division in the U.S. Army during World War II. In combat for 38 months in S.W. Pacific and Luzon in the Pacific, he was wounded at Clarke Frild, Luzon and received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Soldier's Medal.

He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Gardiner; ordained by Cardinal Cooke on February 10, 1979 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City; visited the sick in hospitals and nursing homes throughout the area; was a Moderator at Society of Our Lady Miraculous Metal Novena at St. Charles; and was a member of Nocturnal Adoration Society at St. Charles Church.

The son of Harry J. Carroll and Ethel Scott, he was born January 26, 1916 in New York City, N.Y.

He married Doris Maas on January 12, 1946 in St. Clare Catholic Church, Rosedale, Long Island, N.Y. She predeceased him on December 23, 1992.

He is survived by two nephews: Stephen Carroll of New Hampshire, and Raymond Carroll of Marlton, N.J.; and four nieces: Chris Harvey of Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y., Eileen Merkhofer of Mt. Laurel, N.J., Geralyn Trost of Mt. Laurel, N.J. and Julie Moran of Holbrook, N.Y.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Wednesday June 1, 2005 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Route 44/55, Gardiner, N.Y. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery in Gardiner.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 30 from 5-8 PM at the Copeland Funeral Home, Inc., 162 South Putt Corners Rd., New Paltz, N.Y., and Tuesday, May 31 from 5-8 PM at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Route 44/55, Gardiner, N.Y.

decon carrol was a dear, dear friend. he let me serve on the alter before i was supposed to be allowed to.. he swor me to secreacy. im sure he wont mind me telling now though

Deacon Carroll was a dear friend of

the family and his wife Doris and my mother were the closest of friends. When ever we were in the Hudson Valley, we always attended Mass at St. Charles to see Deacon Carroll. He will be rememberd in our prayers.
