Family-Placed Death Notice

Mrs. Nellie Philpott Newman, 83, died Monday, October 27, 2003 at Bay View Nursing Center. Memorial services will be 1:00 P.M., Thursday, October 30, 2003 at Fripp Island All Faiths Chapel. Services will also be held 2:00, Saturday, November 1, at Bassett United Methodist Church in Bassett, Virginia. Mrs. Newman was born January 7, 1920 in Bassett, Virginia, daughter of Edna Bryant Philpott and Edward Jefferson Philpott. She graduated from Bassett High School in 1938 where she lettered in basketball and was a member of the Literary Club. She earned a teaching degree from Radford University in 1942. She taught in Pulaski, Virginia, Delaware and special education in Upper Saddle River and Mahwah, New Jersey. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort and All Faith's Chapel on Fripp Island. She worked with the Allendale Hospital Auxiliary, Girls Scouts and was a Cub Scout mother. She also volunteered at help of Beaufort and headed the Loggerhead Turtle Program on Fripp Island for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Robert Newman; two brothers, Edward Jefferson (Bud) Philpott and Walter Albert (Pee Wee) Philpott; two sisters, Marie Philpott and Georgie Philpott Ingram. Survivors include two sons, Robert Irland Newman, Jr., of Leesburg, Virginia and William Jefferson Newman and daughter in-law, Sylvia of Evans, Georgia; a daughter, Katharine Louise Newman of Monroe, Georgia; a brother, Joe Curtis Philpott of Bassett, Virginia; and one granddaughter, Joy Marie Newman, of Leesburg, Virginia.
