Tom McVann Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

McVANN, Tom TOM McVANN Tom McVann, of Cumming, died Sunday, November 8th, 2009. He was born March 26th, 1932 in Enniscrone, County Sligo, Ireland. For Tom, Earth's natural workings were a lifelong fascination. An accomplished athlete, Tom competed fiercely and, at the age of 18, became the youngest player in history to receive the All Ireland Football Gold Medal. Building on the training he received from his father, Tom moved to London's golden mile of tailoring, Savile Row, then to New York's Brooks Brothers and later to Saks Fifth Avenue in Atlanta. In addition to being loyally Irish he had also become, in many ways, entirely American, living the dream by opening his own stores. Although a member and officer of the Hibernian Benevolent Society and an Honorary Grand Marshal in the Buckhead Saint Patrick's Day parade he was as proud to be American as he was to be Irish. Tom will be remembered for his unwavering sense of humor and his gentle heart. This Irishman, accomplished athlete, American entrepreneur, generous friend, gentle father and loving husband will be missed. Tom is survived by his wife of 42 years, Imelda; daughters, Maura and Yvonne; their husbands, Kevin and David; grandson, Tristan; sisters, Mary and Nancy; brother, Christy and many cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5pm until 8pm on Tuesday, November 10th at the funeral home. Rosary beginning at 7:30pm. Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, November 11th at 2pm at Saint Brigid Catholic Church, 3400 Old Alabama Road. John's Creek, GA. Interment will be Thursday, November 12th at historic Oakland Cemetery. Tom took great pride in the prospect of being buried amongst his countrymen. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Embracing Hospice in Cumming, Georgia. Imelda, Maura and Yvonne,
You have been in my prayers alot lately and I hope you know you will continue to be. It hurts deeply when one so close leaves us but we have to remember it's us that hurts, they are in the best place of all. Imelda I certainly would be there with you but a small medical problem is going to keep me away but I will be with you in spirit. Love to all of you and GOD bless,

I always looked forward to the times I got to visit with Tom. He was always, always interesting and funny. What I admired the most about him was his pride and dedication to his family. Another reason I'm grateful that Maura is a member of the Coley family ... I will continue to see Tom through her beautiful eyes.
