HIGGINS, William William Sylvester Higgins (Bill) of Marietta passed away Thursday, September 19, 2013. He was 86. Bill was born in Atlanta, GA on February 17, 1927. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1956, after having served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1948 as an aviation radioman second class, and in the Navy Reserve until 1953. Bill worked as a civil engineer and loved his work designing buildings, factories, roads and other infrastructure facilities. He traveled extensively, including to India and South America, overseeing the design and construction of industrial plants. He served as a vice president at three different engineering firms, Starr Parker Associates in Atlanta, Welker & Associates in Marietta, and Simons-Eastern in Decatur. In 1953 Bill married Bertha Lou Stanfield (Bee). They celebrated their 60th anniversary in January 2013. He was a member of the Piedmont Road Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife Bee, son Stephen Higgins of Marietta and his wife Margaret, daughter Betsy Looney of Cornelia and her husband Jon, granddaughter Katie Cutrer of Cornelia, and sister Betty Patterson of Memphis, TN. He was predeceased by his first child, daughter Patricia Johnston of Chattanooga, who died in 1998 and was married to Tom Johnston. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 22, at Marietta Funeral Home, Minister Phillip Satterfield officiating, with visitation from noon to 2 p.m. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mariettafuneralhome.org
