Leslie Brue Obituary

Les Brue, 99, of Iowa City and long-time resident of Audubon, died Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City. Cause of death was a very full and long life. Leslie Nordahl Brue was born on July 11, 1917 in Danway, Polk Twp., Shelby County, Iowa. His parents were Nels and Caroline Hanson Brue.
On May 17, 1941, Les married Ruby Lois Elwell and for more than 75 years they were constant companions. Their marriage was blessed with four children: Carolyn (Robert Off), Nordahl (Suzanne Watts), Richard (Suzanne Tittle), and Catheryn (Frank Martin). They delighted in their grandchildren: Alexia (Ethan Klemperer), Erik (Luo Ying), Robyn (Jeff Kleineck), Rachel, and Marget; and great-grandchildren: Andrew, Nora, Benjamin, Owen, Thea, and Alex.
Les was a B-24 pilot in the Army Air Force during WWII. He flew some 35 combat missions with the 15th Air Force in Italy. His military action has been featured in a series aired on television and radio. Upon returning to Iowa, he farmed in Fiscus until he became the Audubon County Treasurer in 1972, in which position he served until his retirement in 1984.
His parents and siblings, sister Evelyn Anton and brothers Ellsworth, Leo, and Charles predeceased Les.
A memorial service will be held at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon, at a later date. Interment will be at a later date in Danway Cemetery, Shelby County, close by his birthplace and the final resting place of his parents and many other family members.
