A funeral service for Roger Eugene Johnson, 92, was held Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022 at 6 p.m. at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, Coralville. Visitation was held prior to the service from 4 to 6 p.m. Burial was in Audubon, at Maple Grove Cemetery on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022 at 2 p.m. with a visitation at 1 p.m. at Kessler Funeral in Audubon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Roger's name may be made to an animal rescue charity of your choice.
Roger was born on July 14, 1928 in Omaha, Neb., to Clarence and Anna (Larsen) Johnson and passed away at Lantern Park Specialty Care in Coralville on Sept. 15, 2022.
He grew up helping his father farm in the Exira area and later in rural Panora. Roger graduated as Valedictorian of his class at Exira High School at age 16. Roger met his future wife, (Deloris Christensen), in the Exira area and they later married in March, 1951 in Hutchinson, Minn. The couple enjoyed 48 memorable years of marriage before Deloris passed away in 1999.
Roger attended Iowa State University and graduated with a BS degree in Agronomy. Roger then worked for John Hancock Life Insurance Company for approximately 44 years as a loan agent for large agricultural operations and businesses. He retired as a Regional Loan Agent for the Midwest Region. After his wife's death, Roger moved from Sioux City to Iowa City. He enjoyed building a new home and especially enjoyed selecting various plants and trees for his yard. He was a regular attendee at Iowa City West High School sporting events, cheering on his grandsons' football, baseball, and track teams. Roger and his daughter regularly attended Sharpless Auctions and enjoyed searching for antique china and Aladdin Lamps.
Roger was a member of New Horizons Methodist Church in Coralville and was an active member of the Finance Committee.
Roger is survived by his four children Gene (Linda) Johnson of Klamath Falls, Ore., Janice (William) Fisher of Iowa City, Gary Johnson of Studio City, Calif., and Kent (Kim) Johnson of North Barrington, IIl.; four grandchildren, Scott Fisher (Abbey) of North Carolina, Kurt Fisher (Marisa) of Nebraska, Blaire Tannehill (Tom) of Texas, and Dru Zuest (Garrett) of California. He also has 7 great-grandchildren, Avery and Carter Fisher, Whitney and Colin Fisher, Taylor and Trevor Zuest, and Brynn Tannehill.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a great-granddaughter, Lauren Fisher.
