Joan Templeton Obituary

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Joan Mary Casement Templeton died peacefully at home on Monday, December 22, 2008. She was born in Saharanpur, India on February 6, 1917 to Roger Hugh Casement and Mary Katherine Cowie Casement of County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Joan joined the W.R.N.S. (Women's Royal Naval Service) during World War II and was stationed in London where she met Richard Aubrey Templeton of Blythe, Ga. They married September 10, 1942 and Joan had to resign her commission as she outranked her new husband. Mrs. Templeton was employed by the Church of the Good Shepherd on Walton Way from the early 1950s until the summer of 1969 where she served as the Rector's secretary, Director of Religious Education, publications secretary, and occasionally financial secretary. She left Good Shepherd to work for the VA Hospital in Augusta from which she retired in 1997 at the age of 80. She remained a faithful volunteer at Good Shepherd throughout her years at the VA until her death at 91. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Dick. Survivors include three sons and daughters- in-law, Roger Edward Templeton and Charlotte of Martinez, John Richard Templeton and Patsy of Charlotte, N.C., Patrick Aubrey Templeton and Cassondra of Evans; two daughters, Harriet Mary Templeton Deas of Augusta, Diana Elizabeth Templeton Fowler and Larry of Abbeville, S.C.; ten grandchildren, Roger E. Templeton, Jr. and his wife, Becky, Andrew Richard Templeton, Eric Dudley Templeton, Brian Chapman Templeton, Richard Edward Deas, Brett Aubrey Fowler, Jessica Elizabeth Fowler, Chelsea Amanda Shugars, Stephen Anderson Shugars, and Lauren Nicole Templeton. There are also many cousins in Great Britain and relatives from her husband's side. A Memorial Service and Celebration Eucharist will be held Sunday, January 4, 2009 at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 2230 Walton Way, at 4 p.m. There will be a reception in the Parish Hall after the service. The family would like to thank the staffs of Kentwood Nursing Home and Trinity Hospice for the wonderful care given their mother in her final months. A special thanks goes to her caregiver, Harriett Brooker. You are truly a gift from God. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the Church of the Good Shepherd to aid their many areas of outreach. Sign the guestbook at AugustaChronicle.com

My sincerest sympathy to all of you. Joan was a vibrant, interesting woman. I knew her and the rest of you from my childhood, and don't remember the Good Shepherd when Joan wasn't a part of it. She was a dear friend of my mother, Emily Self, and was very kind and helpful to Emily in her last years. I bet Joan and Emily are chatting away right now.

My sympathy to all of you. Joan was
a remarkable, wonderful and loving person. Years have not erased my
memories of her and her family during
my growing up years at Good Shepherd. Peace to Joan, may she
rise in glory. I know you treasure her
memory.

Harriet, Roger, Diana, John, and Patrick; I am so sorry to hear that your mother has died, but I know she is at peace. My memories of your mother, as you know, go as far back as I can remember anything. In those memories, she always has a big bright welcoming smile that made me feel she was truly glad to see me. She was a very special lady, and will be greatly missed. My love and sympathy to all of you.
