Sidney Reaves Obituary

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Sidney J. Reaves, Jr., 71, entered into rest Monday, September 9, 2013 at University Hospital. Funeral services will be held this morning at 10:00 A.M. at Grace Baptist Church of Evans with Pastor Bill Hilley officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be members of the Augusta Richmond County and Columbia County firefighters. Sid started his career at Gracewood State School & Hospital in the 50's. As a teenager he helped his Granddad, Dave Turner, on the yards and greenhouse at Gracewood, but his main love was the fire department. He was a volunteer with the Suburban Fire Department on Richmond Hill Road for many years. He gave his time, love, and soul to firefighting, and even kept a fire radio in his home so he wouldn't miss a single call. He later worked as a paid fireman, but was called back to Gracewood to supervise the fire department there. Sid became the Director of Security and Fire Chief at Gracewood State School and Hospital. In 1976, he was the President of the Board of the Suburban Fire Department and was instrumental in merging the South Augusta fire department with the Richmond County Fire department. After his retirement from Gracewood, Sid had a successful real estate career with Meybohm Realty in Augusta. Sid was born in Augusta, GA on October 29, 1941, the son of the late Sidney Reaves, Sr. and the late Lucille Turner Reaves. He is preceded in death by his brother, David Reaves. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Mrs. Judy Boutwell Reaves; his daughters: Pam Reaves Nobles, Kim Reaves Kelly and her husband Dennis, Amanda Curry; his son: Todd Bishop; and his grandchildren: Alex Kelly, Bailey Curry, and Sawyer Curry. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Mac Bowman and to Dr. Danny Newman. Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church of Evans, 4945 Hardy McManus Rd., Evans, GA 30809 or to the American Heart Association, 190 Knox Abbott Dr., Suite 301, Casey, SC 29033. Chief Reaves' firefighter brothers from Augusta and Columbia County honored him with a fitting tribute for such a dedicated public safety professional. His contributions to the community and his many years of protecting some of Georgia's most vulnerable citizens have not gone unnoticed.

In 1998, Sid sold me my first home. I had such trust working with him, knowing he was an honest person who truly had my best interest at hand. He had a very protective and fatherly way about him. I also had the pleasure of working with both Sid and Judy at Gracewood. What a great couple, and what great people. Sid, you will be missed by so many. Thoughts and prayers are with the Reaves family.

My husband and I used Sid as our Realtor back in his Meybohm Realtor days. He was such a kind-hearted man, & always so interesting to talk to! In fact, he made such an impression on me as a Realtor that three years later, I became a Realtor myself! I still have a good chuckle thinking back on one particular sale we co-brokered with his Florida Buyers, who came up on closing day to purchase a home they had never actually laid eyes on before. Oh my! (But it turned out fine in the end!) ;)) He was always very kind to our four young daughters, who referred to him as Mr. Sid, or, as my 2-year-old twins called him, "the house man with the very loud voice". Sid had a terrific sense of humor, and had so many stories he could tell - especially about his growing up years, and his firefighting days. I think he was the most proud of the years he spent out at Gracewood. And of course we always could tell how much he loved his family - you were always on his mind and heart. May the Lord comfort you all in this time of sorrow. We are so very sorry for your loss.

Judy and family, my heart just breaks for all of you. Anyone that knew Sid loved him. I will never forget our days as neighbors and the awesome neighborhood we had. Sid was our comedian, our escort to the emergency room, and no better friend. We will miss him greatly. My heart and prayers to all of you, love you very much.
