Albert Alexander Obituary

Alexander, Albert (Alex)
passed away July 21, 2009. Alex was born December 20, 1936 in Sand Point, Idaho. He grew up in a humble environment but from the time he was born, he had many friends. The locals called him "Babe" and many throughout the West know him by that name. By the time he settled in Phoenix, he went by the alliterative name of "Alex" Alexander -- golf pro, dancer, and all around true gentleman. Alex taught himself the sport of golf and became a scratch golfer. He entered the Marine Corps and spent most of his time playing golf with the senior officers and teaching them how to play. He earned his PGA card and was a Class A professional with a lifetime membership in the PGA. After a few years as a head pro, Alex went to work for Dunlop, servicing the Pacific Coast. Later, he came to Phoenix where he met his wife, Betz. Together, they ran a golf course in Worland, Wyoming for 12 years. While in Phoenix, Alex was perhaps best known as an assistant club pro at the Encanto golf courses, working for his old friend Jim Farkas. Alex is survived by his wife of 25 years, Betz, two daughters Susan and Laura of California, son Jonathan Baker and grandsons Brian and Jack Baker all of Cave Creek, grandchildren Matt and Jessica La Porta, and great-granddaughter "Little Cindy" all of Seattle, Washington.

Betty and Family,
Alex was a great guy and was always smiling and friendly. Only knowing him and you for a short time, we shared many good times and dinners together at my brothers. Always looked forward to seeing you when we visited Phoenix. I feel so lucky that he was able to teach me some golf tips, and hopefully I was able to repay him in some small way when he visited Ohio a couple of years ago, and I was able to show him around a few places here is Ohio. He just couldn't get over how lush the state was and especially enjoyed Amish Country. He will be greatly missed by all our family. Cherish your wonderful memories and good times together always. With love and prayers to you and your family. Mary Anne Shults and all the Durbins from Ohio.

Mrs Alexander and Family:
I met Alex when I started playing golf at Encanto a few years ago, and later at Maryvale, always a friendly smile and a hardy handshake, and called me by name. I knew he had been sick, and inquired today at Maryvale how he was doing, and when they told me he had passed away, I was shocked and saddened. I'll never forget "Babe", and I know that all who knew him won't either. My deepest condolences to you and your family.
Phillip "Tip" Irish.
