Clement Dickson Obituary

Dickson, Clement Thomas "Dick"
Dick, 72 native of Arizona and proud of it. passed away on November 6, 2014 due to a heart failure. Dick graduated from Central High School and attended Phoenix College and Northern Arizona University where he played basketball and track. During his teenage years there were two things he loved the most: Carol Melander Dickson (his soon to be wife of 49 years) and driving his car 10 mph over the speed limit. He will be greatly missed by his wife Carol, his oldest sister Diana Johns (Bud), his two children: Lance and Casey, and along with three grandchildren: Shelby, Luke and Cole. For almost 30 years, he coached and directed the Lil Saints Softball Organization. His commitment to all of his Lil Saints players and parents was generous beyond measure with time and expertise. Words that remind us of him are: supportive father, loving grandfather, caregiver, funny, coach, inspirational motivator, generous, respected, and loved by many. Graveside service will be held on November 11 at 1PM at Phoenix Memorial Park, 200 W. Beardsley Rd. Phoenix, AZ. Following the service, everyone is welcome to a house reception... directions/location will be provided after the funeral. Memorial donations in Dick's name may be made to Lil Saints Softball. Carol, Lance, and Casey,
It is tremendously hard to lose those grandpas, dads, and husbands. My family has really seen it over the years and your family helped my family get a little bit better each day. It is like Tracy said, what she loved the most about Lil Saints was how happy it made her feel about herself when things were not always good for her dad. We know how much you miss him and we also know that remembering those fabulous moments you had with him will grow stronger every day and there will a come a day when even though a tear is there, there is also so much happiness inside for just getting the opportunity to know and love that man. Dick was so good to us. Be proud of him. I know the angels in that outfield as Tracy said are glad to welcome him. He is always watching us. And now he always can. Thank you for sharing him.

I am sad to here of Dicks passing. I met Dick 20 years ago when I got involved with ASA JO Softball with another one of the Pioneers of girls fast pitch softball, Joanna Burton. We were always on opposing teams but one thing stood out in his approach to the game. He not only taught his girls the right way to play the game but the right way to live their lives. He was always humble in victory and a gentleman in defeat. All of the hundreds of young women that have come through the Lil Saints organization have benefited by his mentoring. He was a tireless promoter of his players and obtained hundreds of college scholarships for his players. Few of us can actually claim to have made a difference in our lives but Dick surely has.I know that by now Dick has a fungo bat in his hands and is teaching the Lil Angels how to play the game.

To Dick's entire Family, and his extended Softball Family:

On behalf of the Umpires of the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) I wish to extend our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences in our loss. I personally knew Dick long before my arrival in the AZ. I was an umpire in Southern California and I remember Dick bringing his teams to play in all the large Tournaments. I umpired many games of teams when he was coaching. When I moved to the AZ in 1999, I continued to work games at all levels in the Lil Saints organization. Dick was the consummate professional coach who taught the game to his girls, respected the game and respected the umpires. Dick will be missed greatly by the Arizona ASA Softball community. I will always hold a special place in my heart for Dick as I consider him one of my favorite coaches. May Dick Rest in Peace.

My heartfelt condolences to Carol and family: The last time I saw Dick was at a family event he and Carol hosted at their home back in the 80s sometime. I was an undergrad at NAU, and I remember conversing with Dick about being a Lumberjack and the whole experience of going to college in Flagstaff. I'm sorry I didn't know him better.

It was a comlete schock to read of Dick's passing this morning. Just recently I was looking thru the 1960 Bobcat yearbook and pictures of Dick playing basketball and baseball. I knew Dick from Simis and Central days (and Carol) A great guy and a hell of an athlete. God's grace and peace to the Dickson family as they grieve the loss of their Father and Husband.
