David Shiroda Obituary

David J. Shiroda

Gilbert - David J. Shiroda of Gilbert, AZ, died Monday, November 19, 2018, after a courageous war against brain cancer. Born on October 25, 1964, in Hammond, IN, David grew up in Baton Rouge, LA, as "big brother" to his four siblings who adored him. He graduated from Catholic High School and Louisiana State University. He worked for more than twenty years as the head of internal audit for Dillard's Department Stores.

An avid LSU fan, David died wearing his beloved purple and gold. If a game was not on, David could be found enjoying the great outdoors, tinkering with something, or hunting for scorpions at night in his backyard --- a scorecard of which he kept affixed to the side of the refrigerator. A self-taught cook, David loved entertaining friends with an array of his southern culinary skills. He never met a fish he didn't want to catch. David cherished his friends and family and they cherished him.

He is survived by his best friend and wife of 30 years, Cathy McDougall Shiroda; his parents, David and Virginia Shiroda of Baton Rouge, LA; his in-laws David and Margaret McDougall of Gilbert, AZ; his sisters Kathleen (Morris) Needham of Jackson MS; Anne (Kurt) Wadenpfuhl of Jacksonville, FL; Erin (Danny) Saurers of Franklin, TN; his brother John Shiroda of Baton Rouge, LA; his niece, Ainsley Saurers; and his nephews, Michael Needham, Luke Shiroda, Wesley Wadenpfuhl, Brad Wadenpfuhl, Christopher Wadenpfuhl, Eric Wadenpfuhl, and Cooper Saurers. He is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, John McDougall. He is also survived by dear friends, Tim White, Greg Smith, and Brendan Fogerty, whose love and compassion provided strength, and by his Dillard's family for their continued support. The family wishes to thank Southland Hospice of Phoenix and Mayo of Phoenix for their care and assistance.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Western Skies in Gilbert, AZ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Mayo Clinic in memory of David J. Shiroda for brain cancer research. https://philanthropy.mayoclinic.org/donatemc

In your lifetime, if you are lucky, you will be able to work with people that make you "better"...a better employee, a better listener, a better friend. Davis was one such person - he fought the good fight - he was a fierce LSU Tiger and I will forever cherish our funny back and forth "digs" at each other over football. I learned much from him and I hope that he may have learned a thing or two from me as well...mostly, I hope he learned that he was a special guy, he was loved, and he will be missed...always.

Cathy McDougall Shiroda

On Monday, November 19th I lost the love of my life, my best friend, my everything... David passed away peacefully at home surrounded by friends and family.

He fought an incredible battled for over 3 years against Glioblastoma brain cancer. David lived way past the life expectancy for this non-curative disease, because of his determination, spirit and amazing zest for life. He never gave up and was a pillar of strength for everyone in his life during his fight.

My sweet angel walked into my life over 30 years ago. It was love at first sight. We had a beautiful life together full of love, laughter, good times and adventure. We met in college, married right after graduation and had the gift of growing up together, which I will cherish forever. In our journey we embraced family and friends and were always surrounded by love.

God must have needed him for something special. He is in a good place, peaceful now and with no suffering. Please pray for our beloved family and friends to help us too find peace.

Thanksgiving was David's favorite holiday. It wasn't just that we ate great food, enjoyed wine, laughed with the ones we loved during our annual Turkey Shoot.to him it was about recognizing that giving thanks, if even for the littlest things in life, fills our life with joy.

We lost my brother, several good friends and relatives over the last 10 years. At the mountain top of sadness we would begin our descend back down to incredible memories and honoring our loved-ones, because David would give thanks for their life and the last gift they gave us.which was to remind us to cherish the here and now and live a good and kind life to the fullest.

His last wish was to help so that other families might have more ways to battle brain cancer, in lieu of flowers, to make a memorial contribution to Mayo Clinic of Arizona, for brain cancer research in memory of his name David Shiroda. https://philanthropy.mayoclinic.org/

To follow this week I will post information about his memorial Celebration of Life service.

David, I love you my sweet angel. Cathy
