Fred Sekiya Obituary

Sekiya, Fred Tatsuo
79, passed away on January 28, 2015 at his residence in Tempe, AZ. He was born on April 19, 1935 in Mesa, AZ. Fred grew up in Lehi, AZ and graduated from Mesa High School. After high school he worked for Guerrero Lindsey as a shop foreman while serving in the National Guard in Mesa. Fred was the first National Guardsman in Arizona to have completed the Army Ranger Program. He later joined the U.S. Army and served as a Field Artillery Officer during his two tours of duty in Vietnam. He received the Bronze Star in 1970 and ended his service with the rank of Major.

Fred enjoyed flying his private plane and building model planes from scrap metal, some on display at Falcon Field. He enjoyed gardening, painting, and assisted in the collection of food stuff for a local charity as well feeding birds and cats in the neighborhood.

Fred is survived by his siblings Ofelia Salas, Sabro Sekiya, David Sekiya, Lily Araiza, Linda Sekiya and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Maria Baca and his brother Leo Sekiya.
A funeral service will be held at Meldrums Mortuary 52 N. Macdonald Mesa, AZ 85201 at 9:00am on February 6, 2015. He will be buried at the National Memorial Cemetery 23029 North Cave Creek Rd Phoenix, AZ 85024 at a later date.
