We remember Greg from our mutual membership in Lake Pleasant Sailing Club. Has it been 11 years already since his tragic untimely passing? The years continue to pass but Greg will not be forgotten. Rest in peace Greg.

Yes, we remember Gregory well. One of the saddest, most tragic accidents ever to befall a member of the Lake Pleasant Sailing Club. Hard to believe he's been gone seven years already. May he rest in peace.

As parents of Greg, we want to thank all of you who have posted such loving and beautiful comments about Greg. We will treasure them. He was a wonderful son to us, a great brother to Sue and David and a devoted father to Colin and Caitlin. It is just so sad. Our hearts are broken and in a complete state of shock at his passing. Thank you again for your comments. We really appreciate it. Richard and Barbara Fine

In Sept 1998, I retired from the US Navy and submarine service and headed into the uncharted waters of civilian employment. Joining Wells Fargo in 2004, I was selected to participate in a formal mentoring program in 2008. I wondered who could possibly understand the likeness of a submarine veteran trying to fit into a bank? Looking back, it was clearly divine intervention that assigned Capt Greg Fine as my mentor! In our earliest conversations, we discovered our common threads in service and even having served for the same officer (in different capacities). A small world indeed.
I quickly discovered that Greg had unique skills and qualities in being able to assess a situation and cut to the chase for an actionable solution. When he traveled to Sacramento for business, he invited me to attend and see the world from his perspective. He guided me to find answers and solutions, ulitized his network to acquire informational interviews to expand my scope and horizon of career choices within the Bank, and provided encouragement when I returned to finish my college degree in 2012, graduating magna cum laude. I invited him to attend both my graduation, and the Submarine Veteran Base meetings next time he to Sacramento. Greg always made time to be available for counsel, swapping a sea story, or comparing the severity of our respective injuries acquired while enjoying winter sports (his - snowboarding; mine - alpine skiing).
His gift of strength, character, resolve, and demonstration of excellence to all he touches will be sorely missed. Learning only today that he has accepted final orders for Eternal Patrol, I know that he has found safe harbor, the lines are doubled, and the liberty lamp is lit. Sailor, rest your oar; we have the watch! Shipmate, you'll be sorely missed.

To the Fine Family....although you've been thru a tremendous loss, please find some peace in knowing that Greg touched all your lives in such a special way....he leaves fond memories of a very wonderful man, who accomplished so much in his life. Forever keep those memories alive by knowing and doing what you know Greg would want you to do. Nothing will ever replace him in your life, but he will always be with you in heart, mind and spirit. We cannot possibly understand what you are going thru, but please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you always...knowing that you've experienced the ultimate loss. I hope you can find peace in knowing he is with the Lord and that he is not suffering, and someday you will be reunited with him forever. We had the pleasure of meeting him but once, but enjoyed the time we had speaking with him, what a delightful and fun loving soul....may he remain forever like that within your hearts.
Sincerely,
Gordon, Jane, Laurie & Kayla

I had the pleasure of working with your dad for roughly 15 years. Over the past few years I had the opportunity to get to spend time talking with him about things outside our work and wanted to share with you that it was clear you were a true source of joy for him. About a year ago we had dinner in San Antonio and he regaled me with many stories of the great times he had with both of you and how much it meant to him. Of the years I have known him, it was the most relaxed I had ever seen him and clear to me that he had come to a really good place in his life.
Greg was perhaps one of the brightest men I have ever met and could quickly cut through complex issues to arrive at a solution. Often times he was so quick to solve an issue that the rest of us needed time to catch up. That said, I know he would say that you were his greatest gift and that all that he would wish for you was the happiness and joy you brought to him.
May God bless you both and grant you the strength and peace to fulfill that wish.

I met Greg 25 years ago when he joined First Interstate Bank. We both went on to work for Wells Fargo once the two banks merged in 1996. Greg was one of the most articulate, caring, and hard working colleagues that I have had the pleasure to work with over the years. To say that he will be missed is very much an understatement. May God bless Greg and his family.

As Greg's brother, I'm speaking for the entire family when I say how appreciative we are of Greg's friends and co-workers who have taken the time to honor him through this guest book. Although heartbroken, your kind words and remembrances give us comfort in the knowledge that his life touched so many, so significantly.
His family took great pride in his accomplishments in his Navy and professional careers. We're equally proud of how he raised his two children, Colin and Caitlin. He'd be the 1st to tell you that they were his greatest achievements.
My brother's work ethic was unparalleled. He challenged himself and others to be their best in all facets of life. I'll miss his extreme intelligence, enthusiasm, energy, sense of humor and compassion for others. Most of all, I'll miss his company.

I went through a racing course sponcered by AYC about a year or so ago with Greg.
We then were in a race as part of the class at Tempe Town Lake.
I believe we hold the TTL record for the longest time spent at the starting line, about 3 minutes as the wind died as we hit the line.
Greg was patient and at the same time determined to get us going.
We had to drop out of the race but took a third place in the second race.
Greg was a great sailer and I learned a lot about sailing from him.
We were 3 slips away from one another at the LP marina so I saw him on weekends out at the lake.
He was a great guy and we shared a passion for sailing , both of us crewing on other boats to get the hang of racing.
I will miss his smile and genial ways.
I will miss his certainty in sailing which gave me confidence in myself.

Greg was liked by all. His wit and intelligence and deep love for his family was known by everyone he came in contact with at his work. There was never a harder working man who enjoyed life and liked to challenge people to do their best. You will be very much missed by all.

My condolences to the Fine family, I am shocked by his sudden passing. CAPT Fine was a pillar of the Submarine Community and I am honored to have served under him under various capacities over the last 11 years. His leadership was a model for both Officer and Enlisted ranks. I was sorry to see him retire but confident that those he mentored would carry on the mission as he would. You are missed, sir, both in and out of uniform.

With a sad heart we are very sorry to hear of the loss of such a fine man. We had the honor of spending some time with him at his parent's 50th Anniversary party a few years ago, and immediately took a keen liking to the sweet person he was. He is gone, but he will never be forgotten, by the people's who's lives he has touched. His parents couldn't have loved him more, nor been more proud of him...he was quite a "chip off the ole block" and for sure acquired the best qualities from both his mom and dad, and has passed that onto his loving children. Taught them well, and raised them with love. You will be missed, by many who you have touched. Love, Gordon & Jane Hirsch

Greg was my navy reserve Commanding Officer many years ago, and he continued to serve as a mentor to me. I learned so much from him and owe much of my success to him. I am so sorry to hear that he has passed away. I was really looking forward to having him attend my change of command ceremony in December. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to Greg's family and friends.

Greg will be missed by so many! He was gifted and I am not sure he knew how special he was. Serious yet funny and he had a real twinkle in his eye! As his peers, we were blessed to work with him, and to have personal time with him where he was often an open book.
Henry Van Dyke was an american author and poet and he provided this :
"Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity."
Somehow, this reminds me of Greg and I will miss him greatly.

Please accept my deepest condolences on Greg's passing. I had the privilege of knowing and working with Greg for 20 years. I don't know that I have ever met a man with such an intense passion about all of his jobs -- Wells Fargo, the US Navy, and that of a father. He did nothing half-way. While much of my interaction with Greg was around our bank work, we would often talk about what he was doing in the Reserves, our respective pastimes and our families; including the joys and challenges raising kids.
Caitlin and Colin, I know you know this already, but your father was very proud of your accomplishments and he enjoyed you at all stages of your lives. His time on this earth was cut short, but through the two of you he created a legacy that I know he is extremely proud of and one that will last for many years to come. We will all miss him greatly

My wife and I became casually aquainted with Greg over the past few years though our membership in the Lake Pleasant Sailing Club. Greg and I were both Navy veterans, his career being so much more distinguished than mine ever was. We even owned the same make and model of sailboat. One could not help but be impressed by Greg's personality and character. All of us who knew him are stunned, shocked, and saddened by this tragedy. Our sincerest condolences to his surviving children and family.
Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!
And when at length her course is run,
Her work for home and country done,
Of all the souls that in her sailed
Let not one life in thee have failed;
But hear from heaven our sailor's cry,
And grant eternal life on high!
