Ruth Metzger Obituary

Ruth Skellie Metzger, 97, passed away on August 4, 2003 in Mesa, Ariz-ona. She had lived in Mesa since 1975. She was born in Larrabee, Iowa on March 14, 1906. Ancestry: Scotland (Ayre) 1746 MacIntosh & Skellie. She was a proud member of Daughters of the American Revolution. She attended Rockford Coll-ege, Rockford, IL class of 1928. Her degrees include Bsc. (Education), Masters (Educa-tion) Pasadena City College, Pasadena, CA, 1952. She taught English at Francis Shimer College, Rockford, IL during 1920's and 30's. She also taught English, Social Studies and History in the Los Angeles City School District, Palmdale, CA, 1955-1974 for both Grammer & Jr. High. She married Donald Metzger in Lanark, IL in 1932. Donald worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corp. Plant B-1 and B-4, CA 1940-1973. He preceded her in death in 1990. Ruth's hobbies included tennis, horseback riding, sculpting (clay), swim-ming and piano. She enjoyed travel: Europe 1931, 1959, World Cruise 1959, and US travel 1968-1972. Other activities and memberships that were important to Ruth are as follows: School Board Member, Palmdale, CA, Substitute Teacher, Mesa, AZ, California Teachers Association, AARP, Church of the Master, Mesa, AZ. She gave blood and rolled bandages, sold cooking grease to War Effort, WWII, grew Victory Garden, collected newspaper and scrap metal and was an Air Raid Warden for WWII Effort. She is surviv-ed by her two sons, Stephen P. and Marshall S. Metzger, daughters in law Josephine G. Metzger and Kim M. Metzger, three grandchildren, Theresa Marie O'Connor, Stephen T. & Donald A. Metzger, and one great grandchild, Cassidie O'Connor. Services will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at 10:00 AM at Green Acres Chapel of Light, 401 N. Hayden Rd., Scottsdale, Ariz-ona.
