Joseph Martin Obituary

Joseph Wayne Martin August 28, 1952 - September 20, 2013 Joseph Wayne Martin (Big Joe) passed away peacefully in Bakersfield, California on September 20, 2013. He joins in heaven his parents Minnie "Grammy" and Len Martin and siblings, Melvin Martin, Lenard Martin, and Shirley Coburn. He is survived by his three children, Cynthia Rhodes, Joseph Wayne Martin Jr., and Bernadette Candelaria, 11 grandchildren, and siblings, Richard and Mary Sinner, Jimmy and Ernestine Martin, Joanne Martin, Bob Martin, Charles and Darlene Martin, Larry and Donna Martin, Johnny and Rorra Martin, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Born and raised in Bakersfield, Joe enjoyed fishing and camping in the beautiful outdoors. He spent many days and nights at Famosa Raceway working on the cars with Uncle Roger. Talented with his hands, Joe liked to build things and enjoyed his work in the oil fields. He started as a roustabout for Hilton Drilling in 1973 and worked his way up to a driller and then tool pusher. He loved rooting for the Dallas Cowboys and appreciated good food and especially tacos! Joe was a very loyal and helpful friend who was loved dearly by all who knew him. The family would like to thank the staff at Lifehouse Parkview Assisted Living, San Joaquin Hospital, Hoffman Hospice, and his numerous visitors and caretakers over the years. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 30, 2013 at 9:30 A.M. at Greenlawn Southwest Cemetery, 2739 Panama Lane. A private celebration will be held following the service for immediate family. www.bakersfield.com/obits

MARY SINNER

October 1, 2013

IN MEMORY OF OUR BROTHER, JOSEPH MARTIN.
SOME OF US WILL THINK OF HIS DEATH AS A SAD TIME, AND IT IS. ITS SAD BECAUSE WE'LL NO LONGER SEE JOE IN THE FLESH. WE'LL NO LONGER GET TO SEE THE SMILE ON HIS FACE. WE'LL NO LONGER FEEL HIS ARMS AROUND US WITH A HUG. NO MORE KISSES ON OUR CHEEKS. YES, IT IS A SAD THING. BUT IT IS ALSO A HAPPY TIME. YOU WOULD'NT UNDERSTAND IT BEING A HAPPY TIME UNLESS YOU HAD VISITED HIM IN THE LAST FEW YEARS AND SAW HIS COUNTENANCE. I AM HAPPY BECAUSE GOD AND HIS MERCY CHOSE TO TAKE JOE TO HEAVEN SO HE WOULDNT HAVE TO SUFFER ANYMORE.
WE WILL ALL REMEMBER JOE DIFFERENTLY, AS HE TOUCHED OUR LIVES DIFFERENTLY. I CHOOSE NOT TO REMEMBER HIM AS THE SHELL OF A MAN THAT HE HAD BECOME AT THE TIME OF HIS PASSING, INSTEAD I CHOOSE TO REMEMBER HIM AS TALL, SLENDER AND GOOD-LOOKING.
IN MY MEMORY, WHEN WE CAME TO VISIT MOM IN GREENFIELD, WHEN JOE WAS ABOUT 5, YOU WOULD SEE JOE, RAKE IN HAND, KEEPING BUSY RAKING THE YARD. HE WAS ALWAYS BUSY WITH SOME ACTIVITY. IN LATER YEARS HE HAD A HANDYMAN BUSINESS. HE WORKED HARD. HE ALWAYS LOVED TO KEEP BUSY.
AS WE REMEMBER JOE, WE MUST REMEMBER BECAUSE OF OUR BAD CHOICES, WE SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES OF OUR SINS. BUT THANK GOD, HE IS A FORGIVING GOD. IN IS: 1:18 IT SAYS: "COME NOW, LET US SETTLE THIS SAYS THE LORD". THOUGH YOUR SINS ARE LIKE SCARLET, I WILL MAKE THEM WHITE AS SNOW. THOUGH THEY ARE RED AS CRIMSON, I WILL MAKE THEM AS WHITE AS WOOL". WE SHOULD ALSO REMEMBER THE PARABLE ABOUT JESUS AND THE WOMAN WHO COMMITtED ADULTeREY WHEN IN JOHN 8:7 JESUS SAID " LET THE ONE WHO HAS NEVER SINNED THROW THE FIRST STONE"! ROMANS 3:23 READS "WE HAVE ALL SINNED AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD. SO LET US NOT BE FOOLISH AND THINK OUR SIN IS ANY BETTER OR WORSE THAN THE NEXT PERSONS.
LUKE 15:7 SAYS "IN THE SAME WAY, THERE IS MORE JOY IN HEAVEN OVER ONE LOST SINNER WHO REPENTS AND RETURNS TO GOD, THAN OVER 99 OTHERS WHO ARE RIGHTEOUS AND HAVENT STRAYED AWAY". YEARS EARLIER I PRAYED THE SINNERS PRAYER WITH JOE AND HE ACCEPTED GOD AS HIS LORD AND SAVIOR. SO I HAVE NO DOUBT OUR BROTHER IS IN HEAVEN WITH MOMMA , RICHARD AND THE REST OF OUR LOVED ONES. MY SECOND TO LAST VISIT TOGETHER, WHICH WAS ON SUNDAY BEFORE HIS DEATH, WE TOOK JOE OUTSIDE AND HE LOOKED UP TO THE SKIES AND POINTED. HE WAS PROBABLY POINTING TO THE TREES AND THE LEAVES AND BRANCHES MOVING, BUT I PREFER TO THINK HE WAS JUST LETTING US KNOW HE WOULD SOON BE GOING UP TO HEAVEN. I WILL NEVER FORGET OUR LAST VISIT WHICH WAS THE FOLLOWING DAY, MONDAY. I ASKED HIM, JOE, ARE YOU SAVED? HE GRINNED LIKE ONLY JOE COULD GRIN AND SAID YES. I ASKED HIM "JOE, ARE YOU GOING TO HEAVEN"? HE GRINNED AGAIN AS ONLY OUR BABY BROTHER COULD GRIN AND SAID YES. I REPLIED WITH "I KNOW YOU ARE JOE". THATS ONE WAY I KNEW HIS MIND WAS STILL AS SHARP AS EVER. BECAUSE HE GAVE THE RIGHT ANSWERS TO THOSE 2 QUESTIONS. I ALSO KNOW HE IS IN HEAVEN BECAUSE ECCLESIASTES 12:7 SAYS " THEN SHALL THE DUST RETURN TO THE EARTH AS IT WAS AND THE SPIRIT SHALL RETURN UNTO GOD WHO GAVE IT". MY LAST MEMORY OF JOE WAS OUR LAST VISIT WHEN I GAVE HIM HUGS AND KISSES, I LOOKED BACK AS WE WERE LEAVING AND HE WAS SMILING AND WAVING GOODBYE.
NOW I WOULD LIKE TO THANK BETTY FOR GOING AND VISITING JOE AS MUCH AS SHE COULD. AND FOR ALWAYS TAKING HIM OUTSIDE SO HE COULD FEEL THE SUN ON HIS FACE.HE LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT. SHE SHARED WITH ME THAT A FEW DAYS BEFORe HE PASSED, SHE WAS VISITING HIM AND SITTING NEXT TO HIS BED. BETTY, AS WE ALL KNOW, CAN FALL ASLEEP IN TWO SECONDS ONCE SHE IS STILL. WELL, SHE FELL ASLEEP AND JOE SAW HER SLEEPING AND WITH A BIG GRIN, BONKED HER ON THE HEAD. THANK YOU BETTY FOR LOOKING AFTER JOE.
I ALSO WANT TO THANK OUR BROTHER BOBBY FOR ALL THE YEARS HES BEEN SO LOYAL , CARING FOR AND VISITING JOE. BOBBY WOULD GO VISIT JOE EVERY EVENING UNLESS HE WAS OUT OF TOWN OR SICK. TOWARDS THE END HE WAS VISITING TWICE A DAY. BOBBY WE WILL FOREVER BE INDEBTED TO YOU FOR ALL THE CARE, LOVE, TIME AND ATTENTION YOU SHOWED OUR BROTHER. THANK YOU BOB.
AND LETS NOT LEAVE SHIRLEY OUT. SHE WAS THERE FROM THE BEGINGING OF JOE'S HEALTH DECLINE AND UNTIL HER LAST BREATH. AFTER JOE WAS HURT IN THE 80'S, SHE DID EVERYTHING SHE COULD TO MAKE JOE COMFORTABLE. SHE HELPED HIM FIND AN APARTMENT. SHE HELPED HIM FURNISH IT. SHE TOOK HIM TO HIS DR APPOINTMENTS. SHE TOOK HIM FOOD. ANYTHING HE NEEDED, SHE TRIED TO PROVIDE FOR HIM. WHEN HE COULD NO LONGER LIVE ON HIS OWN, SHE FOUND HIM THE BEST POSSIBLE NURSING HOME SHE COULD FIND. AS HIS HEALTH DECLINED SHE WOULD HAVE TO SEARCH OUT ANOTHER HOME THAT WAS BETTER EQUIPPED TO HANDLE HIS GROWING NEEDS. SHE SPENT A LOT OF TIME DOING AND GETTING THE BEST FOR OUR BROTHER. SHIRLEY, WE LOVE AND THANK YOU FOR BEING THE DEVOTED SISTER YOU WERE. WE LOVE AND THANK YOU MORE THAN WORDS COULD EVER SAY!!!
NOW I WANT TO LEAVE YOU ALL WITH A PRAYER THAT MOMMA PRAYED IN 1975 FOR JOE AND HIS FAMILY, THAT WAS ANSWERED AFTER SHE PASSED. IT ALSO PROVES THAT PRAYERS CAN BE ANSWERED EVEN AFTER WE ARE GONE.
DEAR HEAVENLY FATHER, UNDERTAKE FOR JOE, THE PROBLEMS HES FACING. GOD HELP HIM TO CALL ON YOU FOR HELP THAT ONLY COMES FROM YOU. SAVE HIS SOUL AND JOSIES. KEEP YOUR HAND ON LITTLE JOE. PROTECT HIM IN JESUS NAME. AMEN AND AMEN.

My last memory was on the 13th as I was visiting with Joe, I fell asleep and woke up to him bopping me on top of my head with his hand. I said, "Well Joe!" and he just grinned at me.
