Bakersfield An only child until her baby brother was born when she was 16, Patricia Pat Self dreamed that one day she would have a big family to put at the center of her life. On December 28, 2023, the large, loving family that she had dreamed of when she was young surrounded her as she passed away at her Bakersfield home.

Born in Wichita, KS, to Orville Arthur Batesel and Lela Fay Batesel, Pat Batesel grew up mostly in Bakersfield. A proud East High Blade, Pat bragged about attending every football game except one. She doted on her baby brother, Mike, and didn't mind that he often tagged along beside her, including on her first date at a drive-in movie theater with a guy named Burrell. The date apparently went well because the two were married on October 18, 1970.

Pat and Burrell started their family soon after, welcoming two sons and two daughters. Before becoming a full-time homemaker, Pat worked for Contel for nearly 18 years. Eventually, she returned to the workforce as a clerk for the Bakersfield City School District before retiring in 2006.

Travel was a lifelong passion for Pat. In fact, she always kept a toiletry bag packed for road trips, and would drop everything to accept a last-minute invitation, even if the destination was just the next town over. However, as her children would point out, for someone who loved the open road, she sure hated driving. Her favorite place on earth was the beach, where she enjoyed watching her grandchildren play.

Pat also took great pleasure in hosting birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and more at her home, which became the central hub for extended family gatherings over the decades. She would work all day in the kitchen cooking and baking, never asking her daughters for help, and loving every minute of it. She adored her many nieces and nephews and her bright blue eyes would light up when they popped by to say hi to Aunt Pat and Uncle Burrell.

The happiest moments of Pat's life came when each of her 10 grandchildren was born. She was such a devoted grandmom that it was rare to see her missing from the stands at their functions and sporting events. She would bake their favorite cakes or her famous brownies for birthdays, and at Christmas, she would make the best spread of goodies. One of her proudest achievements was printing out her photos and providing names and dates on the back so that this important family history will never be lost.

Pat is survived by her husband Burrell; children Lance Tucker Self (Amanda), Justin Self (Misty), Dawnelle Boardman (Robbie) and Vickey Piper (Jeremy); grandchildren Samantha Mayfield, Kaitlyn Boardman (MaKenna), Sierra Self, Breanna Hutchinson (Avery), Savannah Self, Brandon Self, Brandt Self, Dylan Boardman, Brady Self and Adisyn Piper; brother Mikeal Batesel (Vivian); niece Krista Day (Travis); and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, whom she loved dearly.

She was predeceased by her parents Orville and Lela Batesel; nephew Sean Mikeal Batesel; Aunt and Uncle Robert and Roberta Morrow; and in-laws Bill and Clara Self.

A memorial service for Pat will be held at 1 p.m. on February 17, 2024 at 19227 Flightpath Way.
