Alysia STRICKLAND Obituary

STRICKLAND , Alysia Nicole Alysia Nicole Strickland , daughter of Art and Diane, sister of Danielle and Ryan Strickland made her transition from this earthly plane on February 22, 2013. Nicole was a beautiful, fun, compassionate, independent and generous soul who touched the lives of every person whose path she crossed.
Nicole's many gifts included talents for art and creative writing, a keen intellect, and a love for people and dogs. She received her undergraduate degree in Religious Studies and was completing her master's degree in Architecture. Between her studies,
Nicole demonstrated her devotion to service through her social work with the Youth Opportunities program in Baltimore and her three trips to rebuild the Gulf Coast post Katrina. Nicole's nature was one of
inclusivity, never judging others, accepting all on their own terms as her friends. She will be greatly missed by her extended family, many friends and her loyal "girls" Marley and Widow.
A memorial service will be held on March 3 at 2 PM at Unity Center, 2901 N. Charles. In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully received by BARCS, baltimoreanimalshelter.org or AHALA Children's Rights Foundation, www.ahala.org.

I'd known Alysia (Nick as I called her) for better than 7 years. Met thru some friends who i no longer see. She was a guiding light for so many troubled individuals. We shared a lot of interests. Rarely did a week pass that we didn't stay in touch, even though i live 50 miles away. I don't have the capacity for this type of senselessness, it is far beyond me. As an agnostic, this is forcing me to examine higher powers. I hope some good can come of this in the long run. As for now, devastated is the proper term. Not just for Nicole, but for Tae, who meant so much to her, and his surviving children...promising, beautiful boys.

So long my dear friend. I will always remember the best times. We met in 2002, while working as casemanagers for Choice Programs. We earned 19,500k that year and a $4,500 stipend for education from Americorps. I thought it was the best time in our young lives. We sought out to make contributions that would change lives, and the world as we know. You made a courageous impact on so many. I value our friendship, and I appreciate the lessons along the way. Always a dear friend. Omaar

You have all been in our thoughts and prayers since we first heard the terrible news. Our many memories include Nicole and Danielle on the swim team and the many trips to dance practice.
I think so many hearts are broken in Roanoke today, but our memories and trust in God will help us and I pray that you will find comfort in your memories as well.
God bless you all.

It took me this long to process that I will never see you again. I look at all these pictures from a time before we knew each other, then to recent times. All the silliness we shared. The jokes. Those confusing moments early in our friendship. I just... I don't know. I lost a dear friend... My solace is that I saw you... I, in my own way, reminded you that I cared about you, and we shared a laugh. The last moments i have of you were just as the same as the first... Your smiling face. I never told you I loved you, but I did, and still do. You will be forever missed.

I met Nicole first year at UVA while I dated her roommate, Abby. While Abby and I didn't last until the next year, Nicole and my friendship endured and grew stronger. I haven't seen or spoken to Nicole in about 5 years, but she has always been in my heart. I am absolutely devastated by this news and am so sorry I didn't stay closer to her in recent years. Nicole, you were and are one of my best friends, and I'll always love and miss you.

David and I place the Strickland family in our hearts. there are no words to heal this hurt...loss but know you are in our prayers. My remembrance , Nicole attended our very first Mill Mountain Theatre Summer Camp and earned the first "best ensemble player' award. I will miss Nicole, and never forget our friendship. Though in the past two years our lives took different paths, I always carried her with me and I will continue to do so, with the great sadness of never being able to call her, hear her laugh, or her beautiful smiling face. We shared great times, and through my troubled years she was one of my biggest cheerleaders, believing in me when I had little, or no faith. Rest easy, Nikk. Till we meet again.

I am so sorry to learn of your loss. May "the God of all comfort" continue to help you endure this time of grief.(Romans15:4)
