John N. "Jack" FALLON

John FALLON Obituary

FALLON , John N. "Jack" J ohn N. "Jack" Fallon , a long-time resident of Bronxville, died at his second home in Baltimore Sunday, Feb. 24, after a brief illness. He was 89. Mr. Fallon was born in New York City and attended Xavier High School. He left West Point to enlist in the Army and fought in The Philippines and New Guinea, leaving the service a 2nd Lieutenant after also serving in the U.S. Army of Occupation. He used the GI Bill to complete his studies at the University of Virginia, where he graduated in 1947, having already married the former Grace Catherine Craig, who survives him after 66 years of marriage. Mr. Fallon worked on the United Press International radio desk, eventually supervising the then-news giant's award-winning coverage of the anticommunist uprising in Hungary in 1956. In 1963, as UPI's bureau news manager in Dallas, he was in charge of coverage of the Kennedy assassination -- coverage that is recalled in a number of books and on assassination anniversaries, and for which UPI won the Pulitzer Prize. As UPI's foreign editor, he covered Viet Nam, journeying into combat zones and interviewing General William Westmoreland. He is a member of the Delta Sigma Chi organization of journalists. Mr. Fallon later went to work for New York Telephone Co. as an assistant vice president in public affairs, government relations and advertising. His notable first day on the job is recalled as the day a Telephone Co. Manhattan substation filled with PVC wiring exploded in flames. He later as vice president and company officer headed outreach efforts for New York Telephone and then for its post-breakup incarnation, NYNEX. He is a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He also proudly pointed to his founding-member status in the Chili Appreciation Society of America. After retirement, he consulted as a businessman and embraced the stewardship of a 260-year-old Hudson Valley mill property and its grounds. Besides his wife, survivors include daughters Carol of Westport, Conn. (Peter), Denise of Fort Collins, Colo. (Christian), and Grace of Baltimore (Howard); and sons Craig of New York City (Sandy), John of New York City (Susie), Christopher of Baltimore (Elaine), and Bill of New York City. Seventeen grandchildren also survive him.

I worked for Jack Fallon (or "JNF" as he signed all his messages) at UPI in Dallas. In almost 50 years in the business, I never new a greater newsman. He typed with just the index or middle finger of each hand but the words sailed out of his typewriter. He was a great, great, great guy to learn under.

Jack was a gentleman and a first class newspaperman who helped to make the UPI what it was for generations. He was a wonderful friend and a visionary who tackled every problem as if did not exist. Beloved by everyone who knew him, he was a lion among men.

He will be missed.
