Robert Kan Obituary

Robert Oscar Kan was a hidden child in the Netherlands during the Second World War, and immigrated to the US in his early 20's. He went on to earn a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Michigan (1961), and then an MD from Case Western Reserve University (1969). He completed a residency in surgery (Yale, 1971) and orthopedic surgery (Case Western Reserve University, 1974), and worked as an orthopedic surgeon in Baltimore for nearly thirty years. He was married for 23 years to Dr. Jean Schlatter Kan, with whom he had two children. He came out at the age of 60, and was a strong advocate for gay rights. Robert was a lover of classical music, art, and literature. He played the harpsichord, and over the years built three harpsichords as a hobby. He loved to swim, travel, and to spend time with his family and his many, many friends. He often returned to Holland to spend time with his sister Winifred. In 2008, Robert wrote and published an auto-biography detailing his childhood experiences (How Warm it Was, and How Far). Robert showed us all how to enjoy life every day. He is survived by his two children and their spouses(Justin, Miriam, Lisa, and Corey), three grandchildren (Ruby, Leah, and Zach), and by his husband Derrick Booze. He will be missed. I recently learned of Bob's passing. His daughter and husband bought our home in Bexley. Being gay, my partner and I enjoyed Bob's company and many happy times with Lisa and Corey. My deepest condolences. Ed Ayers 2025

Bob was a great teacher, for me. Bright, demanding, sarcastic, funny but caring. He constantly derided the medical students taking his required organic chemistry lab as being pseudo scientists and not as intelligent as PhD students like himself. But he helped us all to succeed and was an unforgettable drive of nature, and a friend. It was 1960, and Ive never forgotten him. You can imagine my surprise when he showed up as a first year medical student at WRU Medical School a few years later when I was in my last year there. After all the kidding about premed students. He wont in to a grand career. I am reading his memoirs right now, years later (2020) and miss him. Even though he wasnt religious, he memory is a blessing.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Kan for seventeen years in his orthopedic practice. He was a great mentor and treated all of us like family. He believed that employees that are treated fairly will remain employees for a very long time. We remained with Dr. Kan until he closed his orthopedic practice. He was a father figure to the entire staff. Rest in peace!
