William Young Obituary

William H. Young

San Carlos, CA - A former reporter and editor for the Enquirer and News (1950-1966), Bill died 4-6-18 after a long illness.

A graduate of Michigan State University (class of 1949), he was governmental and political reporter and Saturday night city editor while with the Enquirer. He received a special award from publisher Robert B. Miller for a series of articles on the Charter Commission which developed Battle Creek's city manager charter.

He left the newspaper to become an editor and publicist for Federal Life and Casualty Company in Battle Creek and became the second vice president. He earned the Chartered Life Underwriter designation. Federal ultimately became an affiliate of the Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Company, which relocated to Orlando, FL in 1987. Mr. Young moved to a retirement community in Green Valley, AZ in 1990.

Mr. Young was a deacon, trustee, and elder of the Westlake Presbyterian Church in its formative years. He was a member of the Battle Creek Lions Club and Country Club. An avid golfer, he scored 2 holes-in-one at the country club, and two more while in retirement in Green Valley.

During World War II, Mr. Young served as a Navy Ensign in the South Pacific, aboard an LCI (Landing Craft for Infantry). He participated in the invasion of Balikpapan, Borneo, near the end of the war with Japan.

His wife, Helen, passed away in 2015. He is survived by three daughters, Rebecca Young of Hastings, MI, Judy Young-Cellilo of San Carlos, CA, Kamala Young of Felton, CA; granddaughter, Sandra Young-Cellilo of San Carlos; brother, Don Young, and son-in-law, Gerard Cellilo of San Carlos.

A Memorial service is scheduled on May 6th, at daughter Judy's home at 2833 Tramanto Dr., San Carlos, CA 94070.
