Terrell McMillan Obituary
Grace Terrell Cook McMillan, known to many as Terrell or Mom, passed away peacefully in her home after a valiant fight with cancer early in the morning on January 21, 2024, surrounded by the cherished memories of love that she so generously shared throughout her life. Terrell was born in Portland, Maine on July 1, 1940, to her loving parents, David and Grace Cook.
Terrell's 83 years of life were defined by her unwavering kindness, generosity, and unending devotion to her family, friends, and the community she loved. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, D. Frank McMillan Jr.; and her husband, of 52 years, D. Frank McMillan. Terrell is survived by her two adoring daughters, Nancy Clark and Ellen Hickl; her cherished son-in-law, Matthew Hickl; her supportive sister, Nancy Hollingsworth; her five beloved grandchildren, Meagan, Ashley, Hannah Clark, Sarah Grace, and Hank Hickl; and her precious great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Clark-Price.
Growing up in Saco, Maine, Talladega, Ala., and Clinton, S.C., Terrell learned the values of kindness, compassion, and generosity that would define her life. She graduated from Clinton High School as part of the Class of 1958. Terrell furthered her education at Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. She graduated in 1962 with a B.A. in Sociology and a minor in Religion.
After graduation, Terrell pursued a career in social work with the County Department of Welfare in Charlotte, N.C. She married Frank on December 31, 1967, and moved to New York City. While in N.Y., Terrell loved working for American Home Magazine. In 1970, Terrell and Frank moved to Nassau Bay, Texas, while he was working for Shell Oil. It was in Nassau Bay where the McMillans would make their home and spend the rest of their lives.
Terrell was a devoted stay-at-home mom whose love knew no bounds. She was always active in her children's lives, volunteering tirelessly in their activities and fostering an environment of love and support. Terrell's passion for bridge brought her joy and lifelong friendships, as she played avidly in various bridge groups over the years.
Her contributions to her community were numerous and impactful. Terrell was a longtime member, former Elder, and active volunteer of the Webster Presbyterian Church. There she loved to share her musical talents as a member of the "Carol Bells" hand-bell choir. She was a longtime member and former president of the Houston Council of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Terrell's charitable nature, willingness to volunteer, and unwavering loyalty to her loved ones left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her absence may leave a void in the lives of all who knew her, but her legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire us all.
A service to celebrate Terrell's life will be held on April 20, 2024, at Webster Presbyterian Church in Webster, Texas, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow. In honor of Terrell's love for spring flowers and vibrant colors, the family kindly requests that attendees wear their prettiest spring attire. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Webster Presbyterian Church or M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, in Terrell's honor to continue her legacy of love and generosity.
