Wanda Faye (Chaloupka) Hakes, 84, of Beatrice passed away at the Bryan Medical Center West in Lincoln, Thursday afternoon, Jan. 15, 2015. She was born on April 14, 1930 in Narka, Kan. to John and Margaret (Holan) Chaloupka and was a 1947 graduate of Narka High School. She graduated from the St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. Wanda and Lester B. Hakes were married on Sept. 16, 1951 and they have lived in Beatrice since 1965. She practiced nursing at St. Joseph Hospital and the Gevin-Haughey Clinic in Concordia, Kan; the former Mennonite Hospital and an LPN nursing instructor at the Southeast Community College in Beatrice. Wanda was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Beatrice; St. Elizabeth Hospital Nurses Alumnae; Kansas Nurses Association; Nebraska Nurses Association; Southeast Community College Faculty Association; Nebraska Vocational Association; Beatrice Business and Professional Woman's Club; and the Gage County Unit of the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed collecting buttons and giving button presentations, flowers, reading and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include children Anita Lytle and husband Tom of Beatrice, Frederick Hakes and wife Nancy of Elgin, Ill., Daniel Hakes and wife Linda of Overland Park, Kan., and Carol Rohlfing and husband Randy of Collinsville, Okla.; 7 grandchildren Gary Lytle and wife Denise, Kristy Claxton and husband Gary, Annette Lytle, Ian Hakes, Connor Hakes, Ryan Rohlfing and fiancé Joy McAlister and Travis Rohlfing and wife Maggie; three great-grandchildren Hannah Lytle, Justin Claxton and Austin Lytle; and sister-in-law Marcy Mae Chaloupka. Wanda was preceded in death by her parents John and Margaret (Holan) Chaloupka; Infant son Gary; brother Glen Chaloupka; and two sisters Helen Marsicek and Laura Vytlacil.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Beatrice with Reverend Charles Spence officiating. Burial of her ashes will be at a later date in Kansas. Public visitation will be held Monday from noon to 9 p.m. at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A memorial has been established to the family's choice with the funeral home in charge.
