Bret Cassity Obituary

Bret Cassity

Detective Bret D. Cassity, St. Louis Police Department, 46, of St. Louis, Mo., passed away Saturday, April 23, 2016.

Bret served on the police force for over 21 years and did so because he believed "Some people have to help and watch over everyone". His gift of courage from the Good Lord made that his calling. Bret had a passion for music, the lake life, his family and his friends. His greatest passion was for his wife, Jennifer.

He was the beloved husband of Jennifer L., nee Benson, Cassity; dearest son of Darrel Cassity and Diane (Paul Lewellyn) Chadwick; dear brother of Matthew Cassity and the late Justin (survived by Catie) Cassity; dear son-in-law of Tim (Robin) Benson and GayAnn (Gary) Range; dear brother-in-law of Trisha (Mike) Smith; dear uncle of Ean Cassity and Chelsea Smith; dear godfather of Mary and Allie Kate Wilson; dear nephew, cousin and friend.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Backstoppers, 10411 Clayton Rd., St. Louis, Mo. 63131 or contributions to assist with Bret's medical expenses (deposits can be made at Eagle Bank & Trust).

Visitation: Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2016, at Kutis Affton Chapel, 10151 Gravois, St. Louis, Mo.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, Edwardsville, Ill.

To dear Bret's beloved wife Jennifer, his parents and family, please know that you are in my prayers on this first anniversary. I was not aware of his passing until September when my boyfriend committed suicide. He had removed a Facebook message from my account before I saw it. Bret taught me so much many years ago when I was a rookie officer. He taught me how to deal with the public and people on calls so eloquently, not by telling me what to do, but through his example. Bret truly had a knack for teaching others in such a subtle, yet lasting way. After I was shot, he sent me a short email, yet I'll never forget it. The last line said, "Remember Leanna that you do not walk alone." I'm unable to express how much that meant to me. The world sincerely lost a true gem. Jennifer, Bret loved and adored you so much and just gushed on about you like a teenager in love for the first time! And although he was not a teenager, I know that you truly were his first TRUE love and that he only grew to love and adore you more through the years, sweetheart. That was just Bret...if he loved someone he did so fiercely. To Bret's parents, no words can provide you any solace. I simply want to convey that he spoke of you both often and ALWAYS, without fail, fondly and with a palpable love, appreciation of and admiration for you both. I'm sending love and prayers!

You were true blue through and through. Bret was one of the finest Detectives that I ever had the privilege and honor to work with on the Major Case Squad. Godspeed Bret and keep watching over us. Until we meet again my friend.
May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
May the rains fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again my friend
May God hold you in the palm of His hand

Jennifer,
Be assured of my sympathy and prayers. I am sorry I cannot be with you physically, but know that I am with you in spirit at this time of loss. Bret is now enjoying a better life - one free from pain. May that be your consolation and may you know gifts of God's love and presence in a special way. As you face the future, realize that you are not alone. God's enduring and faithful love will be with you as well as the support of your family and friends. Love you, Jennifer.
