Dorothy Hackmann Obituary

Dorothy W. Hackmann

February 6, 1928 - April 5, 2024

Belleville, Illinois - Dorothy Hackmann, nee Kopp, of Belleville, Illinois, born Monday, February 6, 1928, in St. Charles, Missouri passed away on Friday, April 5, 2024, at 96 years of age. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.

Dorothy and her twin sister Doris were born to parents, John and Edna Kopp. They were a complete surprise to their parents. Her mom said it was a lot of work but their Dad was very happy to show them off. Their life was a happy one. She will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. After graduating from St. Charles High School in 1946. Dorothy completed Miss Hickey's Business School program in St. Louis, Missouri on October 2, 1948. She was married to Robert (Bob) Hackmann, also, of St. Charles, Missouri. They lived in St. Charles for seven years and then moved to Belleville, Illinois. When her children were born she resigned from office work and became a devoted wife and mother. She made many sacrifices for her family throughout her life, always putting them first. Dorothy was an active member of Signal Hill Lutheran Church for over 60 years. She always volunteered at church serving in as many ways as she could. This included singing in the choir and teaching the young children in Sunday School. She volunteered at Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she received an award for donating over 8000 hours of service. She was also a member of PEO Chapter KC, a philanthropic organization where the advancement of women is celebrated.

Dorothy was an amazing seamstress, making many of her own clothes. Family and friends often asked her to mend or alter some article of clothing and she was always happy to do so. Playing bridge and pinochle was another hobby and she played on a regular basis with neighbors and church groups. Her passions, however, were working on puzzles and Cardinal baseball. She was known for her ability to solve even the most difficult puzzles and loved discussing the latest Cardinal game.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; parents, John and Edna Kopp; daughter-in-law, Sherry Hackmann, and twin sister, Doris Fraley, and brother-in-law, Vernon Hackman.

Surviving are three sons, Steve (Val), Jim (Becky) and Mark (JoEllen); nine grandchildren, Brian, Chris and Jennifer Hackmann, Stacy (Todd) Rick, Jessi (Jordan) Hart, and Brittany (Kevin) Steiner, Matthew (Kaitlyn), Jonathan (Cameryn) and Lucas Hackmann; and many great grandchildren.

Steve, Jim, and Mark,
May God bring you comfort during this difficult time. Your parents meant the world to ours. The days of the Fergusons, Kampers, Braswells and Hackmanns were wonderful times, and the friendship lasted many years. Your mom was a loving, thoughtful angel on earth, always checking on Mom and Dad and helping however she could. Our hearts are sad, but our memories are sweet.
