Belleville, Illinois - Fred M. Wachtel, 79, of Belleville, IL, born July 11, 1942, in East St. Louis, IL, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at his residence, after a ten-year battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Mr. Wachtel worked for IBM for 35 years, and later as a massage therapist for ten years. He was a member of St. Peter's Cathedral Parish and was active with the St. Vincent DePaul Society, Cathedral Conference. He loved water and the outdoors and adored his family.
Fred was preceded in death by his daughter, Marcy Ann Wachtel-Henry; his parents, Lawrence A. Sr. and Annabel, nee Ziska, Wachtel; two brothers, Lawrence (Mary Alice) Wachtel and Jack Wachtel; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Thomas D. and Marcella E. Bedell.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Ann Marie, nee Bedell, Wachtel, whom he married on May 22, 1971, at St. Peter's Cathedral, Belleville, IL; two sons, Jeff (Tiffinie) Wachtel, and Jeremy Wachtel; a daughter-in-law, Shay Henry; ten grandchildren, Alex, Jeremiah, Morgan, Zephaniah, and Marcy Ann Wachtel, Caydynn, Caitlinn, Skylar, Riley, and Shai Henry; two sisters-in-law, Sherry Wachtel and Mary Jo Riley; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Friends may visit from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2022, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL.
Funeral: Funeral procession will leave at 5:40 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2022, from George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL, for a 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter's Cathedral, Belleville, IL, with Msgr. John Myler officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2022, at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, IL.
