A 63-year-old East Alton man was killed when a Ford F-150 pick-up truck struck him as he rode his bicycle Thursday morning, the Madison County coroner announced.
Gerald T. "Tom" Berkel of 327 Broadway St. was traveling southbound in an unlit area on Illinois 111 south of Old Schoolhouse Road in Pontoon Beach around shortly before 5 a.m., when the truck, also traveling southbound, hit him.
Berkel was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m. at the Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City. Authorities say he died of head and neck injuries. Funeral arrangements were unavailable Thursday.
