Frederick Moffitt Obituary

BENNINGTON -- Frederick A. Moffitt, 81, a resident of Harwood Hill, Bennington, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following complications from surgery to repair a broken hip.

Born in North Bennington Oct. 12, 1922, he was the son of the late Paul and Blanche (Elwell) Moffitt. He received his education in the Bennington schools. Mr. Moffitt later attended welding school in Bath, Maine.

He married the former Jane Hier in Bennington, Aug. 7, 1948. Mr. Moffitt owned and operated Moffitt’s Welding which he operated on Gage Street in Bennington for more than 45 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, Florida vacations, trips to Gettysburg, Pa., dogs and birds. Fred built his home and his camp in Peru by himself. Fred played the organ beautifully and he also enjoyed watching the birds from his favorite chair in his living room.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Moffitt of Bennington; a sister, Elizabeth Moffitt Mattison of Shaftsbury; three brothers, Gerald Moffitt of Bennington, DeWight Moffitt of Londonderry and Thomas Mooney of Pawlet; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents Mr. Moffitt was predeceased by a sister, Paula Bedaw, a brother, Kenneth Moffitt and his stepmother, Stella Moffitt.

The funeral will be held from the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Deborah Estey, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in park Lawn Cemetery.

Contributions in Frederick A. Moffitt’s memory may be made to the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

I was very sadden to hear of the loss of Fred. He was a very caring and generous friend to all that knew him. Jane and he were very special friends to me when I needed them most.
