George Hoag Obituary

George F. Hoag 1924 - 2010 BENNINGTON, VT George F. Hoag, 86, a resident of Bennington and a winter resident of Zephyrhills, Fla., died on Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, in Florida. Born in North Bennington Nov. 15, 1924, son of Franklin and Margaret Saunders Hoag, George received his education in Johnsonville, N.Y., schools. A World War II Navy veteran, he married the former Barbara Youngangel in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., on May 23, 1943. Barbara died July 10, 2002. He later married Gloria Rennebu Hoag, who survives. In earlier years George worked as a truck driver before beginning a long career in law enforcement. A volunteer deputy sheriff in the Bennington County Sheriff's Department, George also served as a member of the Vermont State Police Auxiliary. He served as the police chief in Cambridge, N.Y., the head of security at Bennington College and the head of security for the Shah of Iran's son while the Shah's son was attending Williams College. Following this, George was appointed the police chief in Manchester Village and was wounded in a robbery attempt at Whipple's Pharmacy when Manchester Town Police Chief Dana Thompson was fatally shot. George was also an active member of the Bennington Rescue Squad during its formative years. George was a member of the Bennington Club and enjoyed boating, snowmobiling and family picnics. Survivors include his wife, Gloria Hoag of Zephyrhills, four daughters, Fay Ann McKenna of New York City, Linda Garston of Tampa, Fla., Stephanie Chapko and her husband, Rainy, of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and Nadine Guetti and her husband, Anthony, of Bennington; 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Burdick of Troy, N.Y.; two half-brothers, Gary Hoag and Neal Hoag of Woodford; a very special cousin who was like a brother to George, Ray Hoag of Zephyrhills. George was predeceased by a grandson, Russell Hoag. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m., where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 4 TO 7 p.m., when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Should friends desire, contributions in George F. Hoag's memory may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
